The family I am going to discuss is the Murry family. The Murry’s, Steve and Renee have four children, Nicole, Steve Jr., Cole and Hope. Steve and Renee started their family as unwed teenagers. Nicole was born to Renee at the age of 18 and Steve was 19 years of age. Renee had just graduated high school. Renee and Steve married three months after Nicole was born. Neither Steve nor Renee attended college. They both worked full-time jobs after they were married. Since both Steve and Renee were teenagers they depended heavily on their parents for financial and childcare support. They lived in a trailer on Steve’s parents land. Steve’s mother provided day-care to Nicole while Steve and Renee were at work. Renee’s parents provided financial …show more content…

At 15 Nicole became pregnant. Nicole is overweight and insecure. • Hope born sick, seeks her mother’s attention, however with mother always working, Hope learned to find comfort in talking items – not people. Hope lives with grandparents. • Steve Jr. left house at 16 years old to live with girlfriend. • Cole lives with grandparents. Family Systems Theory: An umbrella term for a wide range of specific theories. This theoretical perspective examines the family as a whole. It looks to the patterns of behavior and relationships within the family, in which each member is affected by the behavior of others. Systems tend toward equilibrium and will react to change in one part by seeking equilibrium either by restoring the old system or by creating a new one. (505) • Steve and Renee depend heavily on their parents for support. Nicole now depends on her grandparents too. Passive Aggressive: Expressing anger at some person or situation indirectly, through nagging, nitpicking, or sarcasm, for example, rather than directly and openly. (509) • Renee is constantly on Steve’s case to help out. He refuses. When they do spend time together they spend their time without their children and usually drinking alcohol and smoking
Murray Bowen’s family emotional systems theory (BFST) is an outgrowth of Freud’s psychoanalysis of the individual (Kerr, 1981). Bowen was an analyst by training and applied the “unconscious mental processes” to the study of family systems (Walsh, 2010, p.91). Bowen’s theory exists as a branch under the umbrella of the more general systems theory. System theory posits that a whole system is more tha...
Olson, John DeFrain, and Linda Skogrand,2014, p.74). Family systems theory states the whole is greater than the sum of parts meaning that the family is much more a collection of individuals who live together and are related to each other. It represents an integration of parts that individual members can be understood only within the context of the whole (Suzanne R. Smith and Raeann R Hamon, 2012, p.146). When looking at the family through a family systems theory lens, we can see that the husband and wife have similar backgrounds. They both are Indian and their families have ties to one another because their parents have been friends for nearly seventeen years. The family is the greatest source of influence on a child and that the child’s personality also effects the parents (Suzanne R. Smith and Raeann R Hamon, 2012,
Even when at sixty Granny believed she was dying, Granny overcame the sickness because she endured. Endurance is a means of persevering through adversity. Granny recalls riding out to women having babies and sitting with sick animals and people and hardly ever losing one. Granny was not self-absorbed but became involved in helping others through their problems. Mentoring a person suffering an adversity is a chance to help them but also a chance to make use of a personal adversity and persevere. Joseph Wiesenfarth asserts Granny’s children are her consolation for the pain suffered in her life (“Internal Opposition” 106). The attentiveness of Cornelia and the rushing of Lydia and Jimmy to be at their dying mother’s bedside points not to children who consoled their mother but of a mother who consoled her children overcoming adversity for the sake of their future. Focusing on the future is a means of perseverance through
In understanding others, one must first understand our own family background and how it affects our understanding of the world. Conversely, family systems draw on the view of the family as an emotional unit. Under system thinking, one evaluates the parts of the systems in relation to the whole meaning behavior becomes informed by and inseparable from the functioning of one’s family of origin. These ideas show that individuals have a hard time separating from the family and the network of relationships. With a deeper comprehension of the family of origin helps with the challenges and awareness of normalized human behaviors. When interviewing and analyzing the family of origin, allow one to look at their own family of origin
Lindsay Lohan’s status of fame really rose after the mega box office hit Mean Girls. It grossed $129 million and made her widely popular in U.S. culture (Wikipedia, 2011). As a result of her popularity and our nation’s obsession with tabloids, she started to get stalked by the paparazzi. Suddenly, she began to feel the pressures of living under the public eye and the scrutiny that comes along with it. All the while, she was experiencing a lot of family turmoil at home. Dina Lohan separated from Michael Lohan in 2005 and finalized their divorce in 2007. Lindsay has reported that there was a lot of mayhem in her childhood and often she would find herself in the middle of her parent’s problems because she was trying to keep the peace (Wikipedia, 2011). Throughout the years, she has continued to have a rocky relationship with her father.

Family systems theory helps the therapist understand how each family member is interacting within the family unit and how they are affecting one another. The therapist can use the family systems theory to recognize that each member influences the other and see the family dynamics from a holistic perspective. The therapist also can consider what systemic influences are attributed towards family conflicts, how the family members can be empowered to balance out the family dynamics, and what types of pre-existing strengths the family has to build upon (Walsh, 2011, p. 154). Another theory that is utilized and applied during family therapy is the Biopsychosocial Systems Theory. This theory is used to understand how different systems interact with the family unit.
With a large family such as the Stanleys, financially supporting everyone in the family is difficult with a stable economy, let alone during a period of struggle (Frontline Video, 2013). During this time, the middle class was in poverty, meaning people in poverty originally, are far financially worse (Frontline Video, 2013). The father, Claude, was a pastor (Frontline Video, 2013). The mother, Jacki, made efforts to find work (Frontline Video, 2013). She spent most of her time helping her husband run the church (Frontline Video, 2013).
Family dynamics are the relations between family members as well as the unpredictable interactions that can occur within a family. Every family has its own dynamic. There are so many things to judge when you think of family: there is the order of their birth, siblings that tend to fight, or the single child in a family. It all seems to become apparent through the years. There are four main roles a dysfunctional family. There are Hero, Scapegoat, Lost Child, and Clown/mascot. Realizing that you were a part of a dysfunctional family will certainly aid you in understanding how and why you act the way you do, as well as give you reason to appreciate and view your family differently.

After Anthony’s father’s death, he resorted to alcohol. He would drink alcohol at all hours of the day. He quit the high school’s soccer team where he started varsity since sophomore year. When Anthony needed help in finding work he met another elder figure that he looked up to, “old man Joe”. Anthony would do all the same things he used to do with his father, with Joe. Joe passed away last year. Anthony then started to work with his older brother who he also looked up to. His brother took over their father’s
