1. According to David M. Newman, “a hypothesis is a researchable prediction that specifies the relationship between two or more variables. A variable is any characteristic, attitude, behavior, or event that can take on two or more values or attributes” (38). When building a hypothesis, there is an independent variable that causes a change or changes to a dependent variable (Newman 38). An example of building a hypothesis would be fist to pick an independent variable. An independent variable I would pick would be higher education. For the dependent variable I would pick careers. Shared patterns would be the interaction with the society we live in and the laws that upheld views or beliefs that society has. For example, holding open doors for people or asking how is you are ways our culture presents being polite (Deutsch). Enculturation and socialization are learned things about a culture and the practices and values that said culture has. This meaning that with the statuses you have there are certain roles that you have within each status. For example, the status you have is a doctor. The role you have is to take care of patients with illness and etc. Sometimes though there are thing that will get in the way from you fulfilling your role. These are called role strain and role conflict (Newman 16). Role strain is where the person or people in a certain role lack the qualities to maintain the demands of the role. An example would be parents that do not have the necessary funds to raise and take care of their children (Newman 16). Role conflict is when people are trying to fulfill the demands of more than one role and the demands of these roles clash each other.
