Introduction
Health economics is an important and growing field in Economics. The health sector accounts for over one-sixth of the U.S. economy, and its share of gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow each year. The healthcare costs in the United States have shown an upward trend in recent years as well. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), total healthcare spending in the U.S. continued to grow from 13.4% of its GDP in 2000 to become 15.2 % of the GDP In 2008. Based on the prediction of Health and Human Services Department, the historical growth of health share of the U.S. GDP will continue to hit 19.5% of GDP by 2017. The health sector has been experiencing high rates of inflation due to the increased demand for health services. People may be buying more health services. Patients may be consulting with health care providers more frequently.
The importance of health sector is also reflected through the share of personal income spent on medical care and the number of jobs in the health economy. For example, in 2009 consumers spent 17.9 % of their budget on health care which was greater than the percentage spent on food (13.8%).In 1970, there were 334,000 physicians (or 164 physicians per 100,000 people) whereas in 2009 this number had grown dramatically to become 972,000 physicians (or 317 per 100,000 people). 6. Pedro Hemsley and Lavinia Hollanda 2012: This paper investigates the impact of low-cost health centers on child mortality in Brazil. The paper shows that low-complexity treatments on a large scale are more relevant to reduction of child mortality than high-complexity in a small scale. It also shows that increasing the number of hospitals available has larger impact on child mortality. In addition, the paper shows that the more educated people are the better use they will make of low-complexity health centers. On contrast with Thornton’s study (2002), the results indicate that additional health care decreases mortality. Also, increasing health centers per capita decreases mortality through access to basic services and make high complexity hospitals more effective.
