The Essence of Arthur Dorl Identity, according to Yep (2015), can be defined as giving “people a sense of ‘being’, a lens through which they perceive and experience the social world and a prescription for ways of acting.” (p. 87) My avowed identity (Sorrells, p. 78), or how I see myself, is a white, cisgender , twenty-year old, Apple loving, North American U.S. citizen, who 's Christian and Republican. I hold true to the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ, Republican values and have high value for friends and family. With family and friends, my level of affection and openness varies slightly. I do not openly show affection towards family, but I would do anything to protect them, their integrity, and would not hesitate to lay down my life for …show more content…

Despite a vast ethnic background I mainly identify as a heterosexual, middle class, North American [United States] male. These sexual, economic, and nationality aspects of my life encompasses my positionally (Sorrells, p. 15). Eric Sheppard (2002) describes positionally as bring “conceptualized as both shaping and shaped by the trajectories of globalization and as influencing the conditions of possibility of places in a glob- alizing world.” (p. 307) Along with this positionally, I identify as being both Christian and Republican. As a Christian, I believe that salvation is gained through the grace of God alone; by changing a person’s heart so that they can receive salvation through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. My own family, for example, does not hold a reformed view of …show more content…

The democratic views I hold to include the issues of abortion and gay marriage. While abortion is, essentially, the killing of an unborn child, I believe it should only be legal when there is a high risk to the mother and/or unborn child’s life. Concerning gay marriage, although I hold to a Biblical view of marriage as being between one man and one woman, I do believe it is every human being 's right to be happy. Whether you 're heterosexual or a homosexual, you have the given right to be happy and no one should discriminate you for your choice of sexual orientation. Holding these views, I have generated a negotiated reading (Sorrells, p. 136) of popular democratic beliefs because, though I may agree with the overall premise of the standpoint, I modified the meaning to fit to my morals and beliefs. I know there are some Liberals who don 't hold to such democratic views and vise-versa, I am just making a general statement regarding beliefs of the two parties. My family, however, holds strict pro-life and anti gay marriage views. They believe abortion should be illegal in all cases and that homosexuals should not be allowed to get married. Similar to my theological views, I do not openly share all my political views with family because I know their reaction and do not want them to think differently of me. I am comfortable sharing my republican views with them just
