I read a novel by John Green called The Fault in Our Stars. I have heard so many incredible comments about John Green and The Fault in Our Stars definitely lives up to all of them. This book makes you laugh and it makes you cry. It makes you feel mad and pity. But, one thing this book does not make you feel is disappointed. John Green tells the story perfectly and brings you on a whirlwind journey of a teenage girl with cancer.
The Fault in Our Stars is about a teenage girl named Hazel who has lung cancer and is dying. One day, when she goes to her cancer support group she notices a very attractive guy staring at her. She comes to find out that this attractive male’s name is Augustus Waters, also known as Gus. Augustus had cancer and ended up having to get his leg amputated, but it’s all good now. By her account, some of the fun in going to the movies is throwing popcorn, making noises, and leading the other children in disruptions. They all knew from past times how much noise they can make, how far they can push the theater personal before they get into trouble, and they enjoy seeing the personal angry. There is one book that can, and does affect everyone that reads is The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. John Steinbeck is a very interesting person, and one that did not even graduate from college. New York seems to be the city of new beginnings and for Steinbeck it was just what he needed. He got a big reality check when he tried to become a free lance writer and that did not work out the way he had hoped it would. He then went back to California and published both short stories and novels. Steinbeck got heavily critiqued on his first novels and considers his best work The Grapes of Wrath by far. Since this was such a successful novel and one that needed to be shared with more people they made a movie based on the book, but left out some key parts at the end of the novel. They left out these last chapters because of some key reasons and when you read the book you begin to understand why they could not have put these words into a picture. John Steinbeck creates a picture and feeling at the end of the novel that is almost unbearable to read and leaves you with a feeling of dread but, that is what The Grapes of Wrath is all about.
From the first day that Hazel and Augustus encountered, the two are practically inseparable. The basis of their relationship ended up being Hazel's beloved book, An Imperial Affliction. She required Augustus to read it and in return, he required her to read the book that was the basis of his favorite game. Hazel related to the character in the book, Anna, because she had a rare blood cancer malignancy. Augustus and Hazel bonded within the book because both of them had a burning desire to determine how the story ended, because the author stopped the book before providing the conclusion on what happened to every one of the characters.
According to Psychological Today,“Psychologists find that human beings have a fundamental need for inclusion in group life and for close relationships.” Without people that others need for fundamental reasons, the effects can change them as a person. In Of Mice and Men, the two main characters, George and Lennie, are working at a new ranch. They meet new people and try not to get into trouble. However, not everyone is included in the group. Some are left out and may become lonely. George and Lennie on the other hand have each other in a compelling friendship. In The Fault in Our Stars, Hazel, a girl with cancer, has been impacted by the one and only Augustus Waters. They are both cancer victims and end up falling for each other. They go on a trip to Amsterdam and meet Peter Van Houten, who is getting a little lonely. Throughout the novel, they are at their strongest and weakest points in life and need each other to get through it. Of Mice and Men and The Fault in Our Stars are similar in how they demonstrate themes such as the negative effects of loneliness and the value of friendship.
Cancer affects Hazel Grace, Augustus Waters, and their families deeply, it represents the lost, hope, and surprise of cancer often, but this is not only true in books,it also affects people in real life, parents start to view their kids differently, and the children start to view themselves as nothing but disease, and the culture they once had starts to change. Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace each have their own struggles, Hazel suffers from thyroid cancer and is terminal, Augustus had been cured, but it popped back making his body full of cancer, he as well ending up with terminal cancer. Often organizations and people would give them a little bit more because they are kids who had inevitability of death to look to. They both having to deal with the fact that they never knew what was coming, or if Hazel would lose Augustus first or if Augustus will lose Hazel first, though eventually that fact became obvious. Their families treat them in a way if they were healthy, they wouldn’t be treated in such a way. In real life there are hundreds who suffer cancer, but less who are terminal. Families have to learn how to deal with this, especially when the person is an adolescent. There are point where The Fault in Our Stars shows how different society becomes for those with cancer, and this is true in real life. Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace experiences and cancer let us view the world of cancer for several.

In the book The Fault In Our Stars, by John Green, he develops the idea that young cancer patients must endure many uphill battles during their path to recovery. Initially, Hazel and Augustus prove that relationships are hard to keep up with, but they know they are devoted to be together. However, a true friendship can last forever if it is based on pure honesty. Hazel and Augustus's distinct personalities lead them to forget about their flaws and put their love for each other first which makes them contribute to their own hardships.
One of the main themes of this novel is the fight against cancer. All three of the main characters struggle with cancer. Hazel struggles with her terminal lung cancer, and Isaac has to have his eyes removed because of cancer. Augustus, who has already lost a leg to Osteoscarcoma, struggles with his cancer returning. However, they all learn through this that their cancer does not control them. They still live their lives to the fullest that they can, and make the best of what they have.

Similarly, in Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie strengthen their friendship through love and suffering, and they learn that humans have some control over their end destination. At the ranch they work at, Lennie and George have to choose how they want their lives to turn out, which directly impacts the choices they will make regarding the future. While John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men both establish motifs of friendship, games, and hands, they convey different universal ideas about humanity. In particular, Green suggests that humans cannot always manipulate every situation, while Steinbeck focuses on the ideas that men often have a choice in their destinies.
The way Gordon Korman fuses comedy with real issues makes it amazing and fun to read. Definitely will be recommended to everybody I know who enjoys a good laugh. This was a great book, but took me a lot longer to finish then most, simply because of how upsetting some of the things talked about are. If you’re look for a book that will make you think, and bring tears to you’re eyes, and teach you a thing or two a highly recommend this book, and might actually read it again myself. Hopeful my eyes can stay dry this time.
Green uses various literary elements, a few symbolic scenes, constant visual action along with the clever use of “action-reaction” format to let the text flow hence creating potential tension to make sure that the story isn’t dead at any point. The action is mentioned and the protagonist’s immediate reaction keeps the reader involved and complements each other heavily. Green drags the reader right into the text from the very beginning, and very skilfully keeps the reader engaged to the end of the introduction. With varied techniques to convey his message, Green is able to summarize the novel and grab attention in the few opening pages itself.
When someone reads Divergent they become enraptured in a world of morality, family, loss, love, war, but above all a journey of self discovery. Our whole class was enthralled by the exhilarating journey that Tris went through and were eagerly awaiting the chance to see Divergent come to life on the big screen.
