Evaluation of Case Study 1
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate Case Study 1 and to describe iron deficiency anemia based on a logical rationale. According to Copstead and Banasik (2014), iron deficiency anemia is the most frequent case of anemia in the world. This type of anemia can be caused by the multiple factors such as low intake, diminished absorption, physiologic increase in requirements, excessive iron loss, chronic renal failure, hemodialysis, and idiopathic iron loss (Copstead & Banasik, 2014).The patient in a case study 1 is suffering from menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea. Copstead and Banasik (2014) state that menorrhagia is the most common cause of iron deficiency anemia among women. “Iron is one of the most carefully conserved body substances, and under normal conditions very little is lost except as a result of bleeding” (Copstead & Banasik, 2014, p. 275).
The clinical symptoms presented in a patient such as dyspnea, hypotension, tachycardia, lightheadedness, and low levels of energy are consistent with anemia. However, analysis of the laboratory results of the patient has revealed features that are highly specific for iron deficiency anemia. These findings are hypochromic and macrocytic red blood cells in a blood sample. “Laboratory findings for iron deficiency anemia include red blood cells that are microcytic (small) and hypochromic (pale) “(McKinney, 2010, p.671). Other laboratory findings that consistent with iron deficiency anemia are low erythrocyte count and decreased hemoglobin and hematocrit levels. “ Reticulocyte count allows the critical distinction between anemia arising from a primary failure of red cells production and that resulting from increased red cell destruction” (Carpenter, Griggs, Loscal...
