Does Facebook Make People Lonely?
1.11 billion was the number of active users on Facebook in March 2013. That number represents a 23 percent growth from a year earlier. In The Atlantic Monthly article “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?” (May, 2012), Stephen Marche says that nowadays both the number of Facebook users and the number of lonely people are growing. However, the author argues that Facebook doesn’t make people lonely, but rather that these lonely people are drawn to Facebook because they think it can help them find friendships. He also mentions that Facebook can help people decrease their loneliness if they use it properly. Although some people might say that Facebook leads people to loneliness, I strongly agree with Marche that Facebook does not cause loneliness because Facebook helps people keep in touch with their friends, supports people to make new friends, and assists people in sharing their precious experiences and information with friends and family.

In the article “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely”, Stephen Marche calls to question the impact that Facebook, other social networks, and technology as a whole, has on society. The article begins with a startling anecdote about the once beloved actor and Playboy playmate Yvette Vickers. Despite her major contributions to the film and entertainment industry, Yvette Vickers’ life still came to an isolated and lonely end; her rotting body was found by a neighbor in her home nearly a year after she died. In her final years of life, Yvette Vickers became withdrawn from her close friends and family, and turned to “distant fans who found her through fan conventions and Internet sites (Marche 2).” This story accurately exemplifies the main idea Marche is trying to convey which is that technology is making human connections more plentiful whilst also making them more shallow and superficial. Vickers may have had a mass of online communication each day, however, none of these connections were close or meaningful. No one cared enough to check up on her when she stopped responding. Marche implies that more close and meaningful connections could have potentially resulted in a more timely discovery of Vickers’ body.
In a day and age of a social media dominance, we have never been as densely connected and networked as we ever have. Through studies and researchers, it has been shown that we never have been as lonelier, or even narcissistic. As a result all this loneliness has not only made us mentally ill, but physically ill as well. The majority of society has SNS’s, and some of these users are considerably lonely. But just because the statistics of loneliness and social networks are increasing at the same time does not mean the two are related. Loneliness is expected to become a growing trend in the next decade is because of the growing number of older individuals, not the advance in Social Networking Sites (Aarts, Peek, and Wouters 942). This rise of elders in society is a result of the Baby Boom era. During this period of time, an abnormally large amount of babies were born, and now these people are getting older. This means that there is a much larger population of elderly people than usual, and these older individuals are more likely to become depressed and lonely. Many losses come with old age, such as loss of a working atmosphere, physical mobility, or loss of a spouse/child (Aarts, peek, and Wouters 942). Each of these things can be responsible for feelings of loneliness and a reason behind growing loneliness. Also, quality of life is a major factory in whether or not loneliness becomes an issue in one’s life. Certainly a person who deems themselves to be successful, with a healthy marriage, children, and a stable job will not be as lonely as someone who does not. Facebook was causing problems for University IT departments long before it was ever called Facebook. In 2003, Zuckerberg created an Am I Hot or Not? application on his facemash.com site and was accused of “breaching security, violating copyrights and violating individual privacy” (Kaplan, 2003). So it isn’t surprising that Mitrano, the Director of IT Policy and Computer Policy & Law at Cornell seeks to warn the Cornell student body of possible consequences of irresponsible use of Facebook in the article Thoughts on Facebook. What is surprising is that IT policy guidance is typically found in an actual policy document, rather than an essay or article. Mitrano sought to provide Cornell IT policy guidance on the ramifications of Facebook via friendly Facebook advice from a credible source. Because of missed opportunities to inform, overriding concerns over policy, and lack of knowledge regarding the controls within the Facebook application, Mitrano’s article was not as persuasive as it should have been.

A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online. Facebook is risking dangerous activities, ignoring privacy laws, and demeaning healthy socialization.
