People read literature to explore thoughts, ideas, and motives of characters and authors (Jago). While reading, the reader considers all ideas on the topic and the feelings they have about them. It is important for readers to keep an open mind while they are reading, because sometimes the author may have opposing opinions about the given topic. However, the main reason that people enjoy literature is because they find that they are not alone in the struggles that they face. F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.”
With people being able to connect to literature, authors have been very influential throughout history. Nathaniel Hawthorne challenged people to look at the idea of adultery in 1850 with the Scarlet Letter (10 Influential). Continuing down the line of authors, you will find many more who have made dramatic impacts. Samuel Clemens, or better known as Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Harriet Beecher Stowe persuaded people to reconsider their views on slavery (10 Influential). The list of authors that have made an impact on our American way of thinking goes on and on. Eventually the list will land on D. H. Lawrence. Lawrence was one of the most significant authors of his time—the 20th century.
Controversial Lawrence
D. H. Lawrence was an American writer of the 20th century and his work has had a profound effect on American literature. Born on September 11, 1885, Lawrence grew up on a farm near a mining town called Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England. Being the son of a miner, Lawrence was brought up in a hard working environment. ...ee the reason that literature has played an important role in society. Many writings have helped people through hard times. D. H. Lawrence wrote writings about women and other controversial topics of the time. He is still considered one of the most memorable authors of the 20th century. Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne are some of the other influential writers in history.
If you are going through a difficult time or wish to read about others’ views on a variety of topics, literature is the perfect choice of pastime for you. Reading is one of the many things that connects people. Chances are, at some point in your life, you will find someone who has read the same book as you. People are able to bond over reading the same book, or even the same author. Go out and read a new book or re-read an old one.
readers a dose of reality and human experience. People read literature and end up learning
I think that the good novelist tries to provide his reader with vivid depictions of certain crucial and abiding patterns of human existence. This he attempts to do by reducing the chaos of human experience to artistic form. And when successful he provides the reader with a fresh vision of reality. For then through the symbolic action of his characters and plot he enables the reader to share forms of experience not immediately his own. And thus the reader is able to recognize the meaning and value of the presented experience as a whole. (Kostelanetz 10)
When a person reads a book, they should read it as to amuse them, but also look between the lines for the purpose of the book. Every author, whether they’re writing fiction of non-fiction, has a moral behind their story. Every book is like a picture, a piece of art. Yes, you admire it, but you would have to squint a little bit, twist your head in any angle, and try to find what message the author or painter was trying to send out with their piece of work.
When a writer starts his work, most often than not, they think of ways they can catch their reader’s attention, but more importantly, how to awake emotions within them. They want to stand out from the rest and to do so, they must swim against the social trend that marks a specific society. That will make them significant; the way they write, how they make a reader feel, the specific way they write, and the devotion they have for their work. Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgard Allan Poe influenced significantly the American literary canon with their styles, themes, and forms, making them three important writers in America.
...uch when he was alive and write many novels and other books in his lifetime. Many of his books he published were or still are at the top of the list of what to read in today's world. John Steinbeck really made an impact on literature in which we see today.
Literature has played a large role in the way we perceive the world and it can affect the way in which we think about things. Edgar Allan Poe along with Mark Twain are two of the most influential authors that our world has ever seen. Their descriptiveness and diction has had a huge impact on their readers for centuries. Poe’s gothic style of writing was very enthralling and suspenseful; it left you wanting to know what was going to happen next. Whereas, Mark Twain was a very humorous author that intended to amuse all that read. The descriptiveness that was incorporated by these world-renown authors is tremendous.
America's greatest and most influential authors developed their passion for writing due to cataclysmic events that affected their life immensely. The ardent author Richard Wright shared similar characteristics to the many prominent American authors, and in fact, attained the title of most well-known black author of America. Richard Wright created many important pieces of literature, that would impact America's belief of racial segregation, and further push the boundaries of his controversial beliefs and involvements in several communist clubs.
America was influenced in the antebellum period by many aspects, and authors with their writings were no exception. Henry David Thoreau a famous American writer sparked the ideas of reform and standing up for ones belief through his writings such as Walden, Civil Disobedience, and speeches such as Slavery in Massachusetts. Thoreau started life through education, but still did not conform to who society thought he should be, but rather rose with his idol Ralph Waldo Emerson into transcendentalism and pushed the limits of government. Thoreau was an influential gentleman who stood for what he believed in time and time again and pushed Americans to do the same through his writings and actions.
Literature is an outlet for imagination without restrictions, a platform for expression, and a form of art that outlives its author. Most importantly, it can be a way to help one truly discover themselves. As audiences are exposed to more literature throughout their lives, they not only learn about their true potential, but are also made aware of their flaws and faults in character. Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton are both remarkable characters, but from various events that reveal their shortcomings, the audience receives the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. By appreciating literature, one not only receives a wonderful story, but is also given the chance to grow with the characters and learn lessons from the character’s experiences.
...ruly realize the false reality that literature made. The reader also has a huge role into expressing these false realities to the public, which can cause prejudice in the near future. People need to be open and understanding of different people and situations. Perspective plays a huge role into the thinking of a human mind, and readers should be more aware of the information’s brought upon different ways. Readers should not come up with a preconceived idea based upon the beliefs of other people perspective but should experience these different societies.
History, current events, and social events have really influenced American Literature. Authors have been influenced by the world around them and that has reflected in their works. This can be seen throughout the many eras studied in this class. It can also be seen in all types of literature such as playwrights, fiction, non-fiction, and poems. It can also be seen in all of the different writing styles such as, realism, modernism, and post modernism. It is important that American Literature has been influenced this way because Authors have shown us their personal views and insight to situations one would not get out of a history textbook.
D.H. Lawrence re-created his own life experience through the writing of Son’s and Lovers, an intensely realistic novel set in a small English mining town, much akin to the town in which he was raised. The son of a miner, Lawrence grew up with a father much like the character of Mr. Morel in Son’s and Lovers. Morel (as the father is called) is an ill tempered, uneducated, and rather crude man. A man with little ability to express his feelings to his wife and family, who love him dearly despite the fact that he was seldom cordial to any of them.
Literature has many purposes, and opens doors to unique worlds. Through Literature, we discover ourselves and world time and again.
Literature is rarely, if ever, merely a story that the author is trying to tell. It is imperative that the reader digs deep within the story to accurately analyze and understand the message the author is trying to portray. Authors tend to hide themselves in their stories. The reader can learn about the author through literary elements such as symbolism, diction, and structure. A good example of this is Robert Frost’s poems The Road Not Taken and Nothing Gold can Stay in which he uses ordinary language unlike many other poets that became more experimental (Frost, Robert. “1.”).
Introduction: D.H. Lawrence surely had his way of writing. He was different from many other authors. Lawrence was not a bad different by far, for he was one who could write to relate to almost anyone.
