The song Happy by Pharrel Williams is an up-beat funk song that was released in 2013 on the Despicable Me 2 sound track and will be rerelease later this year on Pharrel’s solo album G I R L. Apart from the name of the song; Happy displays many characteristics that we see today as being quintessentially happy. The lyrics as well as the over-arching theme and tone of the song clearly depict and image of modern happiness as well as setting a feeling of happiness and bliss. Happy as a song and the music video also contains many symbols generally associated with happiness and good feelings and happiness. Happy by Pharrel Williams is a modern pop song that greatly portrays and symbolizes the feeling of happiness.
Lyrics in a song factor more into the theme than any other portion of the song. The lyrics exist so the artist can tell a story or convey a message. For the song Happy Pharrel Williams uses his lyrics to convey a feeling of happiness to his audience. Happy promotes happiness in a traditional sense and not a materialistic sense that is common in modern society. Today we see happiness through buying stuff you do not need and creating happiness through outside sources, while Happy is all about being happy because that is what you want to be, happy. Happy by Pharrel Williams is a great representation of what it truly means to be happy and how one person can be fully happy on their own.
