What is makeup? Is it a thing a woman uses to embellish herself because of low self-esteem? The answer is no. Often, makeup has been hit with insults over the years. It is a true fact that woman spends a lot of money on makeup, possibly averaging about $1,000 a year, but it’s all for a good cause. Makeup, if used correctly, can make several changes, whether it’s physically or mentally. When putting on makeup, a woman feels better about herself, she feels prettier and even sexier. A woman is often criticized by her appearance, she will use makeup to enhance and display her beauty features. It would be unfair to brutally criticize makeup without looking at its benefits to the person putting it on. Makeup is not always used because of low self-esteem. Makeup is used mostly to impress other woman instead of men, it is used for the first impressions. In today’s society, woman are judged a lot on their physical appearance, from how skinny they have to be to what certain look a person needs to have. Makeup is used as a weapon to beat that judgment. For example, let us illustrate the following scenario. A man meets a woman for the first time. Her lips look perfect and rosy, her skin looks flawless, with a glow of blush, and her blue eyes seem mesmerizing and sparkling. Most likely, the man will be attracted to her. He does not even notice she is wearing makeup because it is very carefully applied. If we were to take a closer look at her we would notice that her flawless skin, perfect lips, and sparkling eyes looks so good because of the carefully applied makeup and touch of lipstick. Her eyes look so sparkling because of the carefully placed eye shadow, eye liner and mascara. Her lips so perfect because of the perfectly matched color lip... ... middle of paper ... ...ead to different types of eye infections. One major thing that many people do is sleeping with makeup on, this causes your skin to age quickly and also cause more acne and skin irritations. But like other things if you use too much of something it often will be hazardous. Makeup will always be beneficial, it is not a mask or something a women uses because of no self-esteem. However it can become one of those things if the woman misuses the product. More so, makeup is a tool to enhancing a woman’s appearance. Makeup is a personal preference a woman chooses to create an image she wishes to show. She should not be insulted for putting on the type of makeup she desires. Her image of herself is what counts. So next time you encounter yourself with the woman with the flawless skin and perfectly shaped and colored lips, stop and think. Her self-esteem must be of the charts

Often worn by women and girls, makeup is uses to hide or cover up what is really there. The cosmetic industry makes billions of dollars producing and advertising to women a false sense of reality. Is it more than just being beautiful or does truth lie behind the makeup? In Gwendolyn Brooks’ poem "A Bronzeville Mother Loiters in Mississippi. Meanwhile, a Mississippi Mother Burns Bacon" makeup symbolizes more than a cosmetic product like lipstick or mascara; it is the representation of the fairy tale imagery. Fairy tale imagery plays a very significant role and is a reoccurring theme seen throughout the poem. Similar to makeup, it present the image of protection and maintenance for many people, however, this is especially portrayed through the
If someone were to look at the Victorian society or the American society today, the makeup worn by the women would reflect the women’s lifestyles. Women in Victorian England, like American women today, were seen as more beautiful with makeup. However, the purpose and appearance of the makeup were different; paleness was the ideal then, whereas women today want a healthy glow. What is the significance of this difference?
Before the 1920’s, cosmetics were not widely accepted in American culture, as people associated it with prostitution. Some would wear light makeup such as blush or lip gloss, others wore heavy eyeliner, and usually those women were considered “flappers.” Flappers were women who generally had the exact opposite look of what a woman was “supposed” to look like.

Lipstick was one of the few cosmetics that avoided the “rationing” during the war and was considered a necessity to “maintain national morale”. This gave rise to the so called “lipstick theory” that when the sale of other products and services reduces during a recession the demand for beauty products increases. By the 1950’s over 90% of women used lipstick and rouge which reflected the expansion of the middle class. During 1960’s-70’s feminism took hold in the Western World and women began to go natural without makeup. The feminists believed that make-up made women sex objects rather than

Makeup has transformed the lives of so many individuals and continues to play an important role in the daily routines of many women (and those men who choose to wear makeup). [Pause] The main reason why makeup initially became integrated into the daily lives of many individuals was to help conceal facial features that people were insecure about. Now, as of 2018, makeup has helped many people in terms of their general self-confidence. The stereotype that makeup is used to impress others is as far off as one can get. Over the years, America has become a society that judges beauty based mainly on appearance. Throughout the course of a day, men and women are bombarded with grotesque images of malnourished supermodels selling their own bodies; claiming that they are somehow beautiful. What does it mean to be beautiful? Can self-worth be measured by body weight, clothing size, or shade of lipstick?. “Sometime ago I came across an article in a beauty magazine in which a man said that there were no more ugly women in the world because make-up, weaves, false eyelashes among other beauty treatments have evened out the playing field and has resulted in all women looking the same” ( Gale 1). At the same time, misinformed judgements have caused women to change their physical appearance in order to become more beautiful rather than embracing their own true beauty. To measure beauty effectively one must remember that beauty cannot be determined by physical attributes, but is found in the personality and uniqueness of each individual.
