Change of women in the 50s
In the days of the Salem witch trials you wouldn’t see a women working for a salary outside the house. Puritan women were held to very high standards when the law is the bible. The women were excepted to stay at home while the man went and worked to provide for the family. The women stayed at home and would clean the house cook do laundry and stitch up the family’s clothes.
If she had a child then she still has to do her chores around the house and raise a child. Puritan women wore dresses that covered them all way to their ankles. She had to have dinner ready by the time the man came in from hunting. They were very religious people, so something like adultery was completely unacceptable by anybody no matter what the circumstances. The puritan women didn’t have a voice in politics either, it was mainly men who made the choices for the community or for the household. The main thing a puritan women focused on was being good to her husband and being the best wife she could. They didn’t go out and try to get jobs for themselves because it was unheard of at that time. The women were always looked lesser in the puritans communities because it was eve a women who first bit into the forbidden fruit in the book of genesis in the holy bible. The women didn’t complain about their lives, they were completely okay with being the stay at home mom. They were so busy with the chores that needed to be done around the house that there wouldn’t be any time for her to work if she had any energy after her housework. In those days a lot of the things we take for granted were not around back then so most of everything was done by hand and it took longer to do simple task like was the dishes or simply bathing.

Cooking the dinner meal was always a trip, since they didn’t have thermometers or a way to see how hot the stove was, or if the food was cooked fully. But if there was a leak in the roof then that would be the mans job to get up there and fix the shingles. But since the fifties and up to now doing house work has became ten times easier then it was back then. Thanks to technological breakthroughs in the fifties we have a whole mess load of new appliances to make the chores easier. And nowadays you can find men who play the stay at home dad and the mom goes out and makes all the money for the family. Which is completely different from the sixteen hundreds, and without a doubt living is much easier too. And that the role of the American women in the household has drastically changed over the last four hundred odd years.

The characters in the play are either portrayed as good or evil with no in between , which makes life even harder for them . Salem mislabeled people in town as good or evil , but they had very little or no evidence at all to support it . Salem labels Rebecca nurse as a witch and evil , when really she was innocent and took care of everyone's babies. Abigail was an evil character who was a liar, vindictive and careless , the people of Salem viewed her as good character .
Using the primary sources in chapter 2, child-rearing in Puritan New England was described as the responsibility of Puritan parents. By introducing their children to the importance of education, Puritan parents agreed that child-rearing is a methods that will help ensure their children’s spiritual welfare (Hollitz, 22). The two main goals Puritans taught their children are reading and writing. It is a system they believed that will properly mold their offspring. Parents also taught basic beliefs of religion and principles of government to their children (Hollitz, 22). Puritans took child-rearing very seriously; by using different practices to help the children’s writing development, they are responsible to write: diaries, journals, letters, histories, sermons, and notes on sermons. Although Puritan husband have the power within the household, other than house chore and wifely duties, the mother is mostly in charge of child rearing and provided their child with the proper education on reading, writing, and spiritual (Hollitz, 23).
The focus of Miller’s The Crucible is an appalling witch trial that morfs the once-peaceful town of Salem into a cutthroat slaughterhouse. As a lucrative playwright and a not-so-subtle allegory author, Miller is a seasoned wordsmith who addresses people akin to himself, and is not secretive about that information. The Crucible best serves its purpose as a learning device and a social statement, especially at the time of its publishing. Miller‘s piece showcases the appeals in an easy-to-identify manner that is perfect for middle or high school students who are new to the appeals, or for English majors who have no problem pinpointing them, making this play ideal for a classroom setting.
Proctors Grave Mistake Corruption has always existed in our society since the beginning to present time due to conspiracies such as the witch trials and the communism era. The Crucible by Arthur Miller was written during the era of communism to mere the hysteria. The Crucible is about the Salem witch trials in Salem Massachusetts in 1692. It’s a corrupt witch trial in Salem that’s due to false accusations of witchcraft for personal gains. John Proctor is the protagonist in the story The Crucible who goes through the ultimate test by choosing his reputation over integrity.
The puritans had a strong belief that God had set them on a mission to pave the way for all human kind. The puritan way was a very strict and rigorous system. Anything out of order seemed strange and raised many questions. Anything that went against this code was seen as a sin and the accuser deserved to be punished. They believed in the wrath of God and feared it gravely they tried everything they could to prevent it on themselves. Thus why the witch trials were taken in such serious matter.
The Puritans settled this colony and had strict religious beliefs and rules and harsh punishments as well. Church was mandatory and missing it could result in a fine. The church was also patrolled by a man who held a long pole; one end consisted of feathers used to tickle the chins of old men who fell asleep and the other end was a hard wooden knob to alert children who giggled or slept. The Puritans believed that God decided each person’s fate at birth and nothing could be done to change it. Hangings and whippings were common punishments in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In addition, the church held almost all of the power. Even though ministers were not allowed to hold political office, the clergy made the majority of the important decisions. Lastly, the Massachusetts Bay Colony was truly a man’s world. Women were not included in town meetings or decision making. They were to be patient, prudent, silent, fruitful, etc. The overall attitude of the Puritans seems to be that they are better than everyone else. They considered themselves “a model of Christian Charity” and stated their purpose to be “as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us.” These traits seem to be characteristic of the oppressive ways of England that many colonists were trying to be free from. As a woman who enjoys her rights and freedoms, I would not want to live in the Massachusetts Bay
Through time it can be seen that the world’s history has a nature of repeating its self. Author Miller, was aware of this as he experienced a repitition of history of society’s flawed government. In the text The Crucible, the writer, Author Miller has identified and illustrated the problems society faced during the 1950’s setting by drawing parallels with the setting of the 1962 Salem witch hunt. This setting helps readers to understand the characters of John Proctor and Giles Corey.
Puritans believed in the devil and his role as strong as they believed in God and his role. For many centuries, Puritans had the idea that the weakest individuals in society often committed diabolical acts and sins. Furthermore, Satan selected the most vulnerable individuals to do his bidding, among these individuals, women were often held responsible for many sins, including witchcraft. (Godbeer 12). According to Richard Godbeer, in his book, The Salem Witch Hunt, “it was Eve who first gave away to Satan and seduced Adam.” (Godbeer 12). In 1692, witchcraft became a panic among Puritan society. Even though both men and women were accused of witchcraft, women were seventy-six percent more likely to be accused in Salem than men. (Godbeer 12). Puritan society was a male dominate society and men looked down upon women. There were two particular reasons to why women were often accused of being witches. The first reason, was in due to the Puritan belief that women were the source of evil. The second reason was because of certain events that associated with accusations. These events were being of relatively low social status and income, being rich or financially independent and being a midwife or nurse.
In the play The Crucible, characters are presented in many ways. The ways Miller presents the character of Parris is through what the characters say, stage directions, what the character of Parris says and does and the relationships that Parris has with other characters in the play.
Justice played a big role in The Crucible. In the play, a manipulative girl is infatuated with a married man and will go to any lengths to get what she wants, even accusing others of witchcraft and putting their lives at risk. Her accusations cause mass hysteria in the town of Salem. The Salem community’s obsession with trying to provide justice only caused injustice against the accused.
Women spent majority of their day ironing, washing clothes, baking, sewing clothes and raising their children (page 17). Religion also added to women’s lesser status (page 18). Religion was at the core life of Americans, female submission was decreed to be part of God’s order (page 18). Lucretia Mott soon pointed out that many scriptures celebrated female strength and independence (page 18). As a young girl Elizabeth Cady Stanton learned about laws that limited rights of wives and as an adult found ways to reform marriage and divorce laws (page 23). Things were looking up for women, by 1850 female wage workers made up nearly a quarter of the manufacturing labor work force (page 30). Women were still excluded from occupations such as the military, ministry, law, medicine and jobs felt inappropriate for women (page 32). During this antebellum period women were starting to rise up and realize they deserved to have the same rights and privileges men received. This gave women hope that things could change. By the second quarter of the 19th century few positive changes for women pushed Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Susan B Anthony, Lucy Stone and others to challenge injustices and reform efforts (page
Marriage in Puritan society was more of a contract than a religious sacrament. Daughters were married at a very young age in order to bear many children. While the patriarch of the family’s roles included managing crops and live stock, conducting business transactions and representing it to the government, women were suppose to bear, nurse and rear the children. Women also did charity work and were responsible for work in the house, barn, or garden, and making food or clothing....
In the Salem, Massachusetts, the year of 1692 women were “puritans”. They dressed very modestly, kept their hair hidden, and were loyal to their husbands. The majority were stay at home wives. The young women would work for the older women and would get paid. Elizabeth Proctor, Abigail Williams, and Mary Warren each did one of those things. These women represent the archetypes of this story.
The play The Crucible by Arthur Miller focuses on the frenzy that occurred in the Massachusetts town of Salem in the year 1692. It shows the interactions between the characters and how their varying personalities affected the dynamics of the trials. One of these characters is Giles Corey, an eighty-three year old farmer who is the scapegoat for many of the bad occurrences in the town. The primary reason for this is that he is uneducated and had a fiery personality which led to many confrontations with others. Although Giles Corey’s personality antagonized him with the townsfolk, this same stubbornness is what makes Giles one of the heroes of The Crucible.
The Crucible is a famous play written by Arthur Miller in the Early 1950’s. It was written during the “Red scare, when McCarthyism was established. Many anti-communists wanted to prevent communism from spreading just like in The Crucible many wanted to get rid of witchcraft. Many would accuse others of witchcraft in order to not be accused just like many would accuse people of communism. In The Crucible witchcraft would be punishable by death. Many were scared to be accused; therefore many would admit practicing witchcraft in order to save their lives. The Crucible is considered a good play because it is based on real life events during the Salem witch Trials and shows how fear played a role in the individual’s life just like during the “Red” scare.
