A narrative essay is about storytelling for a narrative story to work it must capture and hold the audience attention you must give a clear understanding of your story. A descriptive essay lets you describe in detail what the essay is all about using words that appeal to your sense of smell, hearing, see, touch, and taste. A descriptive essay lets you use words that describe a person, place, or object. When I compare the author’s narrative essay “Are the Rich Happy?” by Steven Leacock and the author’s descriptive essay “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou it is clear that there are many similarities and differences between the two styles of writings. Descriptive essay is the most effective writing. It not only gives the reader a broader perception of the message but also, helps in broadening the mind of the reader. An effective writer does not allow the reader to make conclusive ideas about their work. Narrative essay is evidently, less effective than descriptive essay. It narrows down every item and makes conclusions for the reader.
Descriptive writing is different from narrative writing because it uses vivid language. The descriptive essay I used for my comparison is “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou. ” As I ate she began the first of what we later called 'my lessons in living." She said that I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy. That some people, unable to go to school, were more educated and even more intelligent than college professors. Descriptive essay is a major component of academic success. It not only broadens the mind of the reader but also, prepares learners to think broadly. In addition, it communicates a deeper message which allows the reader the ability to become effective in brain storming.

A narrative is the revealing effect of a story from the first person point of view, which describes an experience, story or a set of events. In the story, the narrator tries to engage the audience to make the story further compelling. The narrator’s job is to take a point and a stance to display the significant point of his or her’s view.
Sister Flower from Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a descriptive essay. According to Fiction Press.com a Descriptive essay uses the senses of sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste to provide the reader with a mental image or feeling about the subject. When reading this essay I found of all that to be true. In this story I am taken back to when Angelou was a child. I almost hear her soft yet carrying voice of Sister Flower as she talked to Marguerite’s mother, smell the fresh baked homemade scones and taste the ice cold lemonade. This is what a descriptive essay should be. I could close my eyes and easily put myself in the story during that time.
The literary devices used in the literary essay are description, definition, examples, narration, compare and contrast, cause and effect, classification and division. On the other hand, the short story uses narrator, setting, characterization, plot and perspective. I always dreaded taking English, for I was not good at writing and I’ve always had trouble understanding the formats and concepts that the class required. I only understood basic knowledge on how to construct an essay: a thesis, body paragraphs, and conclusion. After a few weeks into the course, I realized that there was a lot more to essay writing then I thought. It was as if I was learning a whole new language. Short stories are a form of literature works that authors use to communicate various themes and issues to the reader. As such, it is common for different short stories authored by different people to have a central meaning or theme that differs from each other. In addition, the way the author portrays his/her central theme or meaning would differ from the way other authors would craft their short stories to best portray their central meaning. While some would use characterization as a means of portraying the theme of their story, other authors employ the use of symbols to better communicate their theme. They do not realize that anything that is changed could come with unintended consequences. “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs and “The Third Wish” by Joan Aiken both illustrate this theme. They demonstrate this by granting the main character three wishes, but with each wish that is granted, brings undesirable consequences. The main idea of this essay is to compare and contrast “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Third Wish.” Although the “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Third Wish” are both fantasies and have similar themes, they have different main characters, wishes, and resolutions.
Narrative is defined as “the general term (for a story long or short; of past, present or future; factual or imagined; told for any purpose; and with or without much detail).” (2006) In a fictional work, narrative may be used to create emotion or evoke emotional responses from the reader. Emotions such as love, fear, anger and pain can be enhanced or exaggerated in a fictional account to pike the readers interest.

Narrative writing is a genre of writing that all students use at some point in school, whether it’s elementary, high school, or college. With Narrative writing I’m sure people have different views than I do and might not enjoy it as well as I. But I’m sure there are others that enjoy it the same if not more than me. This form of writing can be a chance to escape from reality and have fun with your writing. Narrative writing can consist of many different stories from created ones to real life experiences, such as a story starting out true but ending with a twist.
The first essay I ever wrote was hard for me to write. I didn’t know the first step of how to put a paper together. I would start writing and get frustrated that my ideas are not coming together.I knew what I wanted to say but my thoughts weren’t translating into the paper. Looking back on this class, I have realized just how much my writing has improved since the beginning of the quarter I chose narrative analysis and arguments to show how much I improved this year and know my strength and weakness I had in this school year.
The most obvious difference between real essays and the things one has to write in school is that real essays are not exclusively about English literature.
