Animal Rights
In the world today, people see animals as objects of entertainment. Their existence is only acknowledged for our own interest. Most of their lives are lived in chains, isolating them from their natural habitats in the wild. Wild animals are stripped from their homes and families and forced into confinement. They deserve to live in complete freedom and no animal should be held in captivity. Animals are forced into mistreatment through the entertainment industry and they deserve the same rights we have as humans.
A zoo is a prime example of keeping animals confined for human entertainment. Millions of people flock to these establishments daily to admire these animals that are confined to cages. Zoos claim to be “educational”, but this proves to be extremely untrue. "Sometimes the zoo as a learning situation’ is objected to as just not very useful, because the animals are not in their natural habitats, or else misleading, because of the animals’ artificial conditions and abnormal behaviour." (Bostock 169). When an animal is confined to a cage, it tends to go insane and develop abnormal behaviors. These behaviors range from: “stereotyped pacing and weaving to self-mutilation, manipulation of faces, and so on." (Bostock 87). When animals develop these behaviors, it is known as “zoochosis” (Peta). “Zoochosis is so rampant that some zoos even resort to administering mood-altering drugs such as Prozac to address the public’s complaints about abnormal behaviors.” (Peta) "In the wild, these creatures roam hundreds of miles. They hunt their prey, raise their offspring and enjoy complex social relationships. So think how it must feel to be locked up with no stimulation, no room to move and no chance of freedom." ... It is up to us to give animals a voice. "'The least I can do is to speak out for the hundreds of chimpanzees who right now, sit hunched, miserable and without hope, staring out with dead eyes from their metal prisons. They cannot speak for themselves.'" (Jane Goodall quoted in Bekoff and Meaney viii). Whether it is refusing to visit these establishments, or starting a mass protest, it doesn’t matter how big or small your action is. Animals deserve the right to live their lives free of confinement and it is up to s to help them. The next time you visit a zoo, circus, or SeaWorld, look closely at the animals. Watch their abnormal behaviours and see for yourself how truly miserable they are. In conclusion, it is absolutely immoral to keep animals in confinement for human amusement. It is up to us to take a stand for animals and free them from their cruel conditions.
