Every mentor has their own personal style as well as it significantly influences how they behave as a part of the mentor style is his or her ability to get used to their normal responses when the situation involves something other than their normal style. The movie, Something the Lord Made by Joseph Sargent in which Dr. Alfred Blalock mentoring style is very unique from all the people because Dr. Blalock was short temper person which does not make easy for anyone to work with. Moreover, Dr. Blalock guides Vivien Thomas in very different way than any other mentor who will guide their mentee. For example, in the movie while Dr. Blalock and Thomas work on the experimented with original operating procedures on animal; Dr. Blalock encourages Thomas interest in the medical field by allowing him to supervise some of the operations in the lab with him, so he can learn more about the cardiology. Furthermore, Dr. blalock mentor him asking question ‘why’ and ‘how’ this happens, to make his interest greater in the medical field where he develops techniques that allows him to correct an organic heart defect in children in which Blalock leads Vivien to become a better person. Therefore, the reasons they did open heart surgery on dog first because every other doctor think it has a great risk in attempting open heart surgery on someone. However, Dr. Blalock and Thomas saw a great opportunity to prove themselves as a better doctor; since Dr. Blalock was very busy with other duties. He instigates Thomas to work alone on the experimented on the hearts of dogs even though Dr. Blalock knows how he was so talented and determined person. When Thomas did the experiment on a dog and after few days Thomas was able to develop a new type of respirator which can help the babies to get enough oxygenated blood to their lungs. His first real procedure, placing a central line through a stout man’s heart to receive nutrition, would result in few problems if it were performed by experienced hands. However, knowing this is his first operation to be done alone, Gawande’s nervousness grew with every thought of what could go dramatically wrong. This internal conflict is a result of the mistakes a physician makes, and the ability to move on from it is regarded as almost unreachable. For example, in the essay, “When Doctors Make Mistakes”, Gawande is standing over his patient Louise Williams, viewing her “lips blue, her throat swollen, bloody, and suddenly closed passage” (73). The imagery of the patient’s lifeless body gives a larger meaning to the doctor’s daily preoccupations. Gawande’s use of morbid language helps the reader identify that death is, unfortunately, a facet of a physician’s career. However, Gawande does not leave the reader to ponder of what emotions went through him after witnessing the loss of his patient. He writes, “Perhaps a backup suction device should always be at hand, and better light more easily available. Perhaps the institutions could have trained me better for such crises” (“When Doctors Make Mistakes” 73). The repetition of “perhaps” only epitomizes the inability to move on from making a mistake. However, this repetitive language also demonstrates the ends a doctor will meet to save a patient’s life (73). Therefore, it is not the doctor, but medicine itself that can be seen as the gateway from life to death or vice versa. The medical procedure of Xenotransplantation, (transplanting animal organs into humans) has been happening for many years, this medical practice was proceeding mixed results and mixed views regarding the procedure. In the year 1984, a baby girl whom was named Baby Fae by medical staff, became known world wide for the medical procedure she endured. Baby Fae had a potentially fatal heart problem, she was suffering from Hypoplastic left heart syndrome which is a fatal disease if not treated by surgery, (Time Magazine, 1984). The only way to save her was to replace her failing heart with a healthy seven month old baboon heart. The medical professionals that were working on Baby Fae were excited to be able to perform this Xenotransplantation on the infant. After the procedure Baby Fae was acting like any normal healthy infant would. But unfortunately, the replacement heart surgery wasn’t a true success story as the medical staff had hoped. Additionally he learns that even though he is currently a medical student and doesn’t have full training and knowledge he is also held up to these standards. He talks about this through three experiences when he is in an airplane where a passenger has a heart attack, is in a lecture hall where a woman faints, and later when he realizes that he violated the privacy of his patient by telling the patient’s father about the use of a drug that could’ve harmed the patient. The role of the mentor is to “protect the main character,” (Literary Devices, 4) and “through the wise advice and training of [the] mentor … the main character achieves success” (Literary Devices, 4). The mentor is as important to the story as the main character and is often a critical part of the hero accomplishing his quest. Some examples of the mentor are Yoda from Star Wars, Atticus from to Kill a Mockingbird, and Hagrid from the Harry Potter series. In many situations, the mentor is such an effective teacher because they themselves have at one point been in the hero's position. The are able to teach the hero how to defeat a dragon because they once conquered one themselves; they can help the hero overthrow the king because they once dethroned a ruler.
A mentor is someone who shares one’s wisdom, knowledge or experience with one’s junior person so that the person could learn and grow. Mentors have many different style of training or passing on their knowledge to other people. The movie “Something the Lord Made” directed by Joseph Sargent shows a kind of mentoring style in between the two main characters Dr. Blalock and Vivan Thomas who invent a way to treat “blue babies” back in the 40s. Vivan Thomas is a brilliant black men who wishes to go to college, and to become a doctor; however, due to the Depression, he loses all his saving. Instead of going to college, Thomas finds an opportunity to work in the hospital. Dr. Blalock, Thomas’s employer, discovers Thomas’s incredible knowledge in medical, and promotes Thomas as his assistant instead of a janitor. Dr. Blalock is a mentor to Thomas. Dr. Blalock trained Thomas with only a high school certification becomes a medical scientific lab technician. Although Dr. Blalock’s mentoring style of Vivan Thomas is similar from my high school speech team coach Mrs. Kuznicki mentoring style of me, they both speak out their criticism of other without consider other’s feeling, and also acknowledge mentees for what they have done, but Mrs. Kuznicki treats me with more patient, less selfishness and encouragement than Dr. Blalock treats Thomas.
Diligence is a virtue. This is a theme Atul Gawande presents to the reader throughout Better: A Surgeon’s Notes on Performance. In each story, Gawande provides insight on medical studies he has previously embarked upon. For example, in “The Mop-up” the author tells us about a time when he went to India to observe the efforts to eradicate polio. Gawande explains how he followed a supervisor around and how vaccinations were performed. Additionally, in another chapter he debates on whether physicians should take part in death sentences. Throughout his adventures Gawande provides numerous enriching personal accounts of controversial events and what it is like to be a doctor; each with diligence playing a key part.
Coaching and mentoring are not about learning to do something the right way, but are about helping to lead an individual to find their own way of doing it practically and efficiently. Coaching and mentoring sessions are guided with theoretical models, which help focus both the coach and the coachee in attaining desired outcomes for problem situations. However, even with the aid of theoretical models not everyone can coach another person. The first and far most important attribute of a coach is the ability to build relationships with the coachee in that the coachee feels safe and trusting towards the coach, without the capability to interact with the client there may be a lack of progress or motivation.
