Why You Should Watch Insecure A show that should be on your television screen right now is Insecure on HBO. Insecure is a new, one season (so far) predominantly focused, black television show about coming of age, amongst other hard hitting topics. Topics that include: being an awkward, insecure, black female in your almost thirties, learning that being selfish isn’t always a good thing and that communication is an important factor in any relationship you want to have; whether that be platonic or not. However, this is not just any coming of age show. The topics aside from what is on the surface are more hard hitting than that. The main character, Issa, is working at a non-profit that benefits middle-school students of color and her friend Molly is a graduate from college working at attorney’s office. This is a show about social and racial issues that relate to the black experience in the world with Issa and her friend Molly. This show explores what it means to be black in a predominately white world, whether that be career wise or simply just in the real world. Molly feels like she needs to “act” white at her job because that is what they want her to be, they don’t want her to be black so she changes who she is at work. The show is comical and it’s entertaining, it shows the side of black life that people don’t see because they assume we are all “loud, sassy and ghetto.” This is a true and honest television show about life, relationship problems, being selfish, and simply not knowing what the hell you are doing. Graduating from college and not being able to find a job in your almost thirties is a real-life struggle and it shows that.
