In the subject of humanities and social sciences, literacy is an important and extremely vital skill that needs to be developed and maintained. Year 10 humanities is a demanding course for students with the course separated into 4 subjects; Geography, History, Civics and Citizenship and Economics, each with their own unique outline, learning outcomes and overall skills required for the class. However, one thing all humanities subjects have in common is the crucial need for a strong literacy knowledge, skill set and general capability. Without a strong grasp on the concepts within literacy, students will struggle greatly with the course as a predominant part of it is the ability to write, communicate and express ideas and opinions in a wide range of text formats. Thus the ability to understand, interpret an communicate literacy is vital to success.

Throughout the year 10 history curriculum, students are required to discuss concepts and ideas, and ultimately argue to a point of view. The course also requires students to demonstrate complex sentences, and use a variety of adverbs to describe people, places and events (Curriculum, general capabilities, 2017). However, these requirements would prove to be highly demanding and difficult if the student did not have a sufficient literacy experience and knowledgeable background in order to complete set tasks and reach literacy expectations. Students who do not have strong literacy skills will find it hard to complete tasks such as discussing texts, tables, timelines and illustrations and will also find it potentially difficult to support their opinions or arguments with references, evidence and without a clear understanding on the text they are given.
