All of these things can be used in my future classes throughout my college career. This essay reflects on how my writing of English Composition essays has grown, or benefited from continuous revising, visiting the Writing Center, and implementing the feedback I have received from my instructor. The process of writing and revising of my first paper for English Composition 1 benefited from the various resources offered at the University of Oklahoma. Although I have learned a lot and have improved my writing skills tremendously I still feel that I have more to work on.
Even though we have a couple of weeks left on this course, I believe that I was able to accomplished my goal in this class to become a better writer, and write different types essays effectively such as descriptive, comparative and contrast, argumentative and research. Our first writing assignment was descriptive essay. I like the fact that we had a read around on our class. I had great opportunity to read my essay to the class entitled “My Sweet Little Princess.” I learned through our class discussion, that a descriptive essay simply describes something or someone by appealing to the reader’s senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Also, I learned that we have to use vivid details to make a person, place or experiences to become true to life which I failed to do, in which my professor commented on the side my paper.
Learning new ways of writing and reading is very significant because it helps us become a better writer and reader. Goal#1 is “To help students understand the ways that readers read and writers write in and beyond university.” Some of the texts which I have read last semester which has left a huge impact on me are “Unteaching the Five Paragraph Essay” by Foley, “Mother Tongue” by Tan “Teaching Standard English…” by Christensen and last but
I would like to start off with thanking you for having the time to review the work and effort that I have put into my English 101 Final Portfolio. In the time in class that I have had this quarter I have learned new techniques that I had not known before in writing, for example I have learned about how to build paragraphs in a correct formal way. In my work in the portfolio I hope to show how my skills as a writer have improved from the work I have done before. I plan to take the experience that I have had in this class and take it with me to help me improve as a student on other class topics. In the time that I have been in class I believe that it has helped me in a positive way to help me manage my time, along with building my confidence in writing.
As far as any other information that I feel that shows my improvement as a writer I would like to include any and all of the information that from the reading assignments as well as any in class information that has helped with my writing skills over the semester. The reading assignments have been instrumental, because they help to give me a framework for what I am supposed to be writing.
The purpose of this memo is to reflect on my progress that I have been improving from taking the technical writing class, English 235. By studying and practicing for the fundamental of the technical writing within eleven weeks, I have learn a new perspective of writing, and know how to inform others, by using a different techniques and different styles of writing. Through the technical writing class, I learned many necessary skills that can be used in the next level college class, workplace, and future career. Therefore, this reflective memo will give you my feedback from my learning, and experience from taking the English 235 class. Technical writing & Communication English is really important language because everyone uses it to communicate with others.
The responsibility I have gained during this experience is incredible and has taught me to be a much more organized person. During this semester I was taught a process of how to write a paper and organize it. I found that all of these responsibilities have made me realize that I could definitely take the next step forward in my academic career. Each new experience I involve myself in has made me continue to grow and constantly learn something new. I am someone who has never really enjoyed English classes in the past and I when I registered for English 101 I only saw it as a requirement to graduate but I really did enjoy this English course and I know that it was something that was worthwhile for me.
The workshops we did in class help me because every single time I received feedback on my writing I made changes in order to improve it. No doubt that after receiving feedback from others my writing sounded much better. With all this said it is evident that this English course helped me significantly. I learn different techniques that helped me improve both, my reading and writing. Now that I reflect on all the information I learned, I realize how much better prepared I am when it comes to reading and writing.
THE PLAN OF MY EMPIRICAL RESEARCH I have decided to examine extensive reading in respect of its effects on EFL learners' language development because I am curious about this supplementary tool. I was highly inspired by the articles mentioned in the previous chapter of my thesis which indicate that extensive reading is effective in upgrading reading comprehension, accelerating ESL learners’ reading speed, increasing acquisition of vocabulary, improving English structures, writing as well as fostering positive viewpoints of pleasure reading in English. Secondly, when I was at the pre-intermediate level, I read my first English book. It was a graded reader, of course, and I felt so proud of myself to be able to read real English. As I think of those times now as an English teacher, I would like my students to experience the same happy feeling of the achieved success.
I wrote rhetorically for the first time, put my writing online, and gain a new understanding of writing. Of course, I learned about MLA format and citing, which is more important than it seems to be. Also, realized that my writing performance can be improved immensely based on spending more time on my assignments. As well as my grammar, general flow, and the maturity of my writing enhanced thanks to this class. The main reason I became a better writer was because my teacher.
