Basic fact: Toxoplasmosis is an infection cause by a parasite called T. gondii this parasite is found everywhere worldwide, and many people carry in in their bodies but many not know because of the lack of symptoms. Toxoplasma gondii can cause infections that can be acute or chronic. In about sixty percent of healthy adults who become infected, the organism cause not symptoms, but in most of the remaining forty percent they experience mild, flu like symptoms, low grade fever, and fatigue that resolves without intervention in a few weeks. How do people get infected? The organism that causes toxoplasmosis can be transmitted in four different ways. The most common way is through contact with feces of an infected cat. Cats, the primary carriers of the organism, become infected by eating rodents and birds infected with T. gondii. Once ingested, the organism reproduces in the intestines of the cat, producing millions of eggs known as oocytes. The second way humans become infected with T. gondii. Is through the ingestion of raw or undercooked meats. Also by person to person, but this transmission only occurs from mother to fetus during pregnancy. This type of transmission occurs only if the mother is in the acute stage when the organism is in the mother’s blood.
