World war one was the war that changed how warfare is looked upon. The citizens of a country pre world war one looked at a war in positive manner. The soldiers who volunteered themselves expected a walk in the park with their closest pals. The soldiers were persuaded by propaganda posters and sometimes even celebrities. The soldiers who survived experienced severe trauma and mental discomfort. This trauma was a direct result of the violence and agony they experienced during the war. Motivation for this war was the idea of nationalism and the pride in one’s country. This war was the cause of disillusionment among many of the soldiers that were involved in it.

Remarque’s awful war experience influenced him to write his novel to show the realistic brutality of war by graphic violence, the emotional impacts on the privates as well as the impact of nationalism by the Germans.
