World War 1 was considered to be one of the worst wars in those days. The war lasted from 1914 to 1918 for a total of about four years. The war began in Austria, and some names used for World War 1 are The First World War, The War to end all Wars, The War of the Nations, and The Great War. World War 1 was caused by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie of Austria. They were killed by Gavrilo Princip, a man part of the Black Hand. The war started in Austria when Franz Ferdinand and Sophie were killed. Overall, there were 32 countries that were fighting in World War 1. Some of the major countries were the United States, Russia, Italy, France, and Britain who then formed the Allied Forces. Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire all formed the Central Powers. Europe was where most of the battles were fought in. France, Belgium, and England are the major countries where a lot of the battles were fought in. There was 8.5 million deaths and 20 million wounded in the war. The youngest soldier, who was from Britain was 12 years old. ⅓ of the deaths in World War 1 were caused by disease. 2.7 million men were drafted into the war from the United States but only 1.3 million volunteered. The United States paid over $30 billion for World War 1. The War to end all Wars was the first war where tanks and airplanes were used. Even though the U.S. wouldn’t let African Americans be citizens in the United States, about 13,000 of them served in World War 1. Germans were good at deciphering codes that The Allied Forces gave each other. But then they came up with an extremely difficult language so the Germans couldn’t translate it.
