I have learned so much while working at the state hospital. I have so many people with all types of mental illness from week to week each person with a different situation or illness. I work on the men’s unit of the hospital. This unit house 25 men and sometimes if it is an overflow the unit will borrow rooms from the other side, which is the women’s unit. I have had the pleasure of working with a total of 10 patients and each one came into the hospital with a different attitude about stay as well as their mental illness. While working with this population, I have learned how to be creative in assessing my clients. There is an 18 year old with behavior problems more than a mental illness; he stays in trouble because of his lack of respect for others. The client is at an age where respect and self worth is nothing to the mind. I try breaking the rules when comes to making phone calls to keep him from getting upset with the clients or the MHTs. I go the recreations where the women and men are present together women. They have shown me a new version of what family is all about. I witness a young lady with her head bowed down as if she did not feel well, one of the men went over to see what was wrong with her, he was being a pure gentlemen, but one of the other women show this and she came running over to rescue her from the man. This made the man furious, but he did not put up a fuss to her, he just walked back to his seat. As time goes on, the law has put more emphasis on facility just like Bridgewater State Hospital in which many of the actions of the facility workers can face legal consequences such as facing prison time, fines, lawsuits, and etc. Society has a better understanding of why certain people act the way that they do and being more knowledgeable about psychology and mental diseases allows us to have a different approach when dealing with these topics or these individuals. Until the middle of the last century, public mental health in the United States had been the responsibility, for the most part, of individual states, who chose to deal with their most profoundly mentally-ill by housing them safely and with almost total asylum in large state mental hospitals. Free of the stresses we all face in our lives, the mentally-ill faced much better prospects for peaceful lives and even recovery than they would in their conditions in ordinary society. In the hospitals, doctors were always accessible for help, patients were assured food and care, and they could be monitored to insure they never became a danger to themselves or others. Upon my exit from the Rehab Center, I consider my interaction with the patient who had spin my new world upside down. Thrown completely off guard, I realized two things: sickness can change people into something you, or even they, might not expect, and the second, I don't take things personal. No one wants to be sick or in the hospital by any means, and as a nurse student it is part of my education and professional obligation to hold my anxiety and disappointments of my patient’s odd behavior. Finally I promised to myself to deal with people at their worst, and always have positive attitude toward them and try to heal them back to their best.
My experience in mental health clinical was very different from any other clinical I had before. In a mental health clinical setting, I am not only treating client’s mental illnesses, I am also treating their medical problems such as COPD, diabetes, chronic renal failure, etc. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the unexpected events. In this mental health clinical, I learned that the importance of checking on my clients and making sure that they are doing fine by performing a quick head-to toes assessment at the beginning of my shift. Over the years there have been many changes in the work-place. Since the second World War there has been a steady increase of women on the workforce across all the different types of careers there are in the United States. Some careers have seen more of a rapid change than others, a few of the career fields that have not really had much growth in gender diversity have been Engineering and Technology. Both of these fields have always been more male dominate throughout the history of their existence. The problem is that both of these careers demand a constant stream of new innovative ideas to fuel advancements in different types of technology. Those advancements are also very important to the public’s day to day life, as both of these fields are all around us every day. There is no better way to get new ideas than to bring in someone who has a different thought process than you. That is why colleges and companies need to try harder to bring in women to these careers rather than overlook them. With that being said if someone is not right for the job, then they’re not right for the job, the problem is that many companies are choosing male engineers over female engineers. If the careers in these to field want to keep having great advancement, they’re going to need all the great minds that we can get, and stop turning so many away.
