I have learned so much while working at the state hospital. I have so many people with all types of mental illness from week to week each person with a different situation or illness. I work on the men’s unit of the hospital. This unit house 25 men and sometimes if it is an overflow the unit will borrow rooms from the other side, which is the women’s unit. I have had the pleasure of working with a total of 10 patients and each one came into the hospital with a different attitude about stay as well as their mental illness. While working with this population, I have learned how to be creative in assessing my clients. There is an 18 year old with behavior problems more than a mental illness; he stays in trouble because of his lack of respect for others. The client is at an age where respect and self worth is nothing to the mind. I try breaking the rules when comes to making phone calls to keep him from getting upset with the clients or the MHTs. The more I would allow him this asset, the more my client become verbally abusive in giving me orders. I decided that this client is far from being raised, but I will demand my respect. I go the recreations where the women and men are present together women. They have shown me a new version of what family is all about. I witness a young lady with her head bowed down as if she did not feel well, one of the men went over to see what was wrong with her, he was being a pure gentlemen, but one of the other women show this and she came running over to rescue her from the man. This made the man furious, but he did not put up a fuss to her, he just walked back to his seat. His feelings were hurt because wanted to make sure the young lady was alright, but was interrupted with, “leave her alone she do not want to talk to you”.
