Women in The Odyssey In Homers epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus has a long journey home full of complications. These complications can largely be blamed on the female gods. The goddesses are not portrayed as the sweet protagonist, rather they are road blocks in the hero’s voyage home. Women in the Odyssey are not written to be as heroic or intelligent. Instead they are witches or temptress. Females in the poem are nothing more than obstacles. For example, Calypso uses her beauty to catch men to feed her desire and cure her loneliness, “He lay with her each night for she compelled him’’. (Homer 5.50-51). On the other hand, Circe is an evil witch who “Tossed them acorns, mast, and cornel berries – fodder for hogs” and turns men into pigs (Homer 10.35-38). During the expedition to Ithaca, Odysseus and his counterparts reach Circe’s island. Circe invited Odysseus and his men to a feast, however once they all arrived Circe made a swift move and turned Odysseus’s men into swine. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, is the perfect example of a global thinker. She cares about all demeanors that touch her and other, Athena is the complete opposite of a witch or a hostess she is “Wisdom’s daughter that walks alone, the mark of Athena burns through Rome’’! (Riordan 2012). Since Athena is also the goddess of war and battel, she has a strong understanding on Odysseus battel and complications he has been through. If it was not for Athena, Odysseus would not have got home safely. Athena is the only women in the Odyssey to have a positive view from men. Reason being she is a strong leader that plays a very demanding, controlling role in the epic. Similarly, Calypso is extremely powerful and manages to keep Odysseus captive for many years.
