The woman's rights movement largely contributed to the extent of democratic ideals expansion. Women have never been treated the same as men and documents show how woman were treated back then. Frances Grage wrote, “that man over there, says that women need to be helped into carriages and lifted over ditches” (Doc 7). This shows how in the 1800’s women were looked on as. It’s saying women are incapable of doing things for themselves and need a man to help them. Another example is a picture of a woman under a bridge with her child and the husband crossing the bridge drinking his life away (Doc 4). This document shows the life of typical women during this time. The woman stays at home cleaning the house and caring for the children while the husband goes out drinking and having fun. Another source showed how the women's movement rebelled. “Almost 300 people... arrived at the convention” on July 19, 1848. This is an example of people standing up for their democratic ideals. Education during this time period was severely lacking. An outside source showed this my saying “children might attend a part-time, one room school. Teachers had limited education. Most children simply did not go to school”. This shows how bad the education system was and how it needed to be changed. Thanks to Horace Mann an American education reformer, this did change. Horace believed “right to education of every human...Correlative duty of every government to see that the means of education are provided for all” (Doc 3). Through this time period in education the main focus of the era was to build an educational system that was right for the students. Also there was a need for a curriculum that would serve to organize students to participate in the world of business. Schools have become to have very low principles and also low value that would not suitable for the students to have the best level to be successful outside of school. With what was happening in schools the government than started to believe that the low standards and quality the students had put the nation at jeopardy and even the economy around them. The goal of the social movement is to change things in society, to refuse to go along with the norm, and to undo a social change. Along with this, women gained a louder voice to speak out about what they wanted to change and implemented the change. Prior to the Women’s Rights Movement, women were often timid, compliant, obedient, and mistreated. After the 1920s, a movement towards more equality was shifted in society views, however not all were convinced or changed by the new ideas of women. Although women began to get increased rights, the typical gender roles, which they were expected to follow did not loosely lesson.
