On October 6, I attended a Wind Ensemble in Bennett Auditorium and was delighted by the experience. All of the pieces that were played were definitely interesting, but some pieces were more enjoyable than others. When I arrived at the event I was expecting a larger audience than what I saw, however I have not gone to anything like this event before so it could possibly have been a good turnout. Overall the performers all did very well and I would definitely like to attend more concerts similar to this one. The first piece that was performed by the ensemble was Lincolnshire Posy composed by Percy Grainger. 107 by Cécile Chaminade was definitely interesting. This piece definitely had some unique qualities compared to the others I heard. At the start the flute is playing the melody alongside the other instruments in the ensemble, but over time more instruments fade out and the soloist takes more and more control of the performance until just the flutes remain. The Soloist and the flutes transfer the melody back and forth in a counterpoint-like fashion, and eventually goes to only the soloist performing. Right before the end the other flutes join again in the same way as earlier in the piece. The third piece was Pale Blue on Deep by Aaron Perinne. This piece caught me off guard in the very beginning with the dissonance between some of the instruments, but it began to get more consonant as the piece progressed. It also started off giving me a dark and eerie feeling until it would suddenly shift to a more light and ambitious sound. The feel of this piece fluctuated a lot between ominous and excited, as well as a few other similar emotions on the light and dark sides of emotion. This piece very much felt like there is a story behind it, but I am unable to decipher what that story
