Considered to be an exceptional playwright, William Shakespeare was a popular English writer, poet, and actor during his period in the late 16th century. Born on April 23, 1564, William Shakespeare was born into a wealthy middle class family in Warwickshire, England. Interestingly enough, Shakespeare was reported to have died on his birthday with his death remaining as a mystery to the modern era. His early education consisted of learning to read, write, and speak Latin, all of which were provided for him for free in Stratford’s grammar school. However, he did not continue studies at a university, but rather he decided to marry Anne Hathaway at the age of eighteen. Accompanied by “the best actor, Richard Burbage [at] the best theatre, the Globe, the best dramatist, Shakespeare” achieved his financial success from the plays he wrote (Brown 2). His works can be categorized into three separate genres; the romantic comedies, the tragedies, and the histories. Shakespeare grew fond of the romantic comedies that the genre distinctively became recognizable of his works. Some of his notable romantic comedies included Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His history plays also helped unite his country when England struggled to recognize their own national identity. Shakespeare, like many other dramatists at his time, drew inspiration from other successful playwrights and incorporated their works into his own. Shakespeare also proved to have an interest in poetry equal to that of his interests in the theatrical arts. His love for poetry is most notable throughout his collection of 154 sonnets, Shakespeare’s sonnets. These poems “[tell the emotions] of strong attachment, of jealousy, of grief at separation, of joy at being together and [of] sharing beautiful experiences” (Brown 8). However, she has every right for her emotions as she feels betrayed when Oberon “[plays] on pipes of corn and [verses] love to amorous Phillida” (2.1.66-67). Similar to the mortals within the play, the fairies also seem to have a complicated relationship, with no outside supernatural force to tinker with their love interests. She, too, is accused of having affection for Theseus, especially when Oberon claims that Titania is responsible for Theseus’s love affairs. In contrast, Titania is depicted of having a stronger concern over her relationship with Oberon, believing he interrupts her duty as queen of the fairies. As a result, Titania possesses a strong sense of guilt for being responsible for the catastrophes within the human world (2.1.85-117). In a way, it can be perceived that Titania, along with her subordinates, establish a matriarchal dominance over the fairy society. She has an authority over Oberon, hence why many mortals and fairies worship her
