Wide Awake by David Levithan published in 2006 by Random house. The novel has 221 pages and is speculative fiction novel set in the near future. In this novel the author explore the theme of how if you really believe in something, then you are willing to go to any extreme for it. The novel is about a teen, named Duncan, who is extremely involved in politics. When Stein, the president he was rooting for to win, wins the election he is excited at first, but then Kansas governor, Stein’s opponent, tries to have its votes recounted over a technicality, so Duncan his boyfriend and their campaign friends head to a giant rally in Topeka to stick it out until the race is decided. “ I can't believe there’s going to be a gay Jewish president”( Pg1,line1). He then starts to talk about how some people in his school weren't taking the news well, especially his history teacher, and about his relationships with the people a his school. He next starts to talk about how he began in politics and how his passion of it grew. After this, Duncan and all of his friends go to the Stein headquarters for a post election party. Then out of nowhere, a message from Steins opponent starts to play on the big screen and says, “I address you tonight because over the past twelve hours a good number of events have come to light in the state of Kansas that have given me clear and fair reason to believe that the election for the next president of the United States is not yet over. Because of this new and important information, I will not concede the election …” He then said that he was going to start an investigation in Kansas to get the votes figured out. This had everyone shocked and angry because they knew that he was going to do anything in his power to not count votes, specifically Stein
