Women stay in the abusive relationships because our society puts an enormous pressure on them. Fear, shame, oppression and radical change push women to choose life in misery and stay silent. Morris, Shoffner, and Newsome (2009) report, when the person is isolated from friends and family members they become dependent upon the person abusing them, therefore, are less likely to leave the relationship. It becomes even more difficult if the person comes from a diverse background, thus is financially dependent upon the perpetrator and there may be children involved, and immigration status may be a factor.
Women will continue to suffer from domestic violence unless there is some sort of intervention to help them. When dealing with this population, it is essential to create a safe environment where the woman can talk freely about the abuse without any retaliation from the abuser. When someone comes into a therapeutic session, everyone deserves to be treated with respect and care. This in turn will create a sense of hope that a different type of life can be possible.
