Many key factors are starting to affect women’s reasons as to why they want to terminate pregnancy. The problem is, not many people know what the reasoning or what the key factors are. A scholarly article by Biggs, Gould and Foster (2013) stated, “An understanding of why women seek abortions has been largely missing from the discussion.” (p. 1). Why women decided to terminate their pregnancy is one of the biggest questions that gets left unanswered. A study was conduction from January 2008 through December 2010 to shed some insight as to why women seek abortions. The study interviewed 954 women from 30 abortion facilities across the United States. The women were English or Spanish speaking and at least 15 years of age. “Fewer statistics exist illustrating why women get abortions.” (Waldman, Ackerman & Rubin, 1998, p. 3). In this popular media article it shows the percentage of American women that will have an abortion in their life time and a few examples why. Waldeman et al. conducted a survey in 1998 that explained why some women decided to get an abortion. The largest percent of women, 76%, said they were afraid of how a baby would change their day to day lives, 51% had a relationship problem or didn’t want to be a single parent, 13% stated the fetus was not in the best of health, 7% had problems with their own health and the lowest percentage, 1%, was from rape or incest relations. No matter what topic I would have chosen, I would have still learned the difference between the two as fast as I learned on this topic. Personally, I thought you could pick anything related to your subject and get just as much information as the other. After reading both articles repeatedly, I concluded that I could get double the information from the scholarly article and write my topic a lot easier and smoother without the fear of plagiarism. I did learn quite a bit of information from both of the articles, they both had different forms of information on abortion that I needed and used. I feel that I wrote a lot easier and had a better understanding with the scholarly article. The popular media had attention catching facts and words, but didn’t tell me much about the study conduction on abortion itself. It pretty much just gave me percentages on the reason why women had abortions. The information provided was informing and useful in some ways. I also gained some respect on this subject, there is more then what meets the eye. We as women should know more about abortion, abortions I should say. Most people, women in general, think it’s the selfish act of killing a child. When you read articles like the ones I just read, regardless if they are scholarly or popular media, you get a little more in depth into what some women go through and legit reasons as to
