According to Richard Walker, an educational psychologist at Sydney University, data shows that in countries that spend more time on homework, students score lower on a standardized test called the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). I believe that we should not have homework in school. Homework doesn’t improve test scores, there is less time for free time and family time, and we already have 7 hours of school. Shouldn’t that be enough time to learn what we are supposed to? One reason why we shouldn’t have homework in school is that homework doesn’t help test scores. Although an hour or two of homework per week won’t impact anything, hours of homework each night will lower students’ test scores. A study from the University of Oviedo in Spain surveyed homework habits of 7,725 kids, and children with 100 minutes of homework a day or more, test scores start to decline. Previous research from the University of Oviedo also states that too much homework leads to higher stress and health problems. School is a time for learning, and it takes up most of the day. After school is a time for doing what kids want and take up new hobbies. Students also should hang out with friends after school is over since they can’t really talk with their friends in school (besides recess, but it’s only 15 minutes) and a social life is important. Getting sun and exercise is important too. Being cooped up in school for the whole day and then going home just to do more work isn’t good for kid’s health.
