The world around us is changing fast. People want to know and ready to learn more about different things, such as animals. Many of us have ever been in zoos and had different experience and emotions are associated with this visit. Some may say that keeping animals in captivity is a crime, others would totally disagree with this statement. People are different and their points of view are different. Regarding to me, I disagree that we should close zoos, because we have the opportunity to see wild animals, to learn about them and to provide qualified care to the animals.
First of all, people have the ability to see wild animals. Most of the animals are protected by law from hunting, such as wild tiger or blue macaw, so zoos are only one place where people can see them. Also, facts that make animals so attractive to zoo goers is their immune size. For example, African elephants can weigh as much as 15,000 pounds and killer whales can reach a length of 32 feet and a weight of 22,000 pounds. Many zoos are providing learning sessions, camps, zoo tours and workshops. Saint Louis Zoo visitor research shows:” when people experience the wonderment of animals, they are spurred on to learn more and act differently”. Thanks to the national zoo’s, scientist found that elephant mothers are protecting their children from predators by making clans. Other animals like chimps or killer whales are companionship as humans are. Lets start with zoos, where animals are kept in cages or large enclosures for public viewing. Millions of people visit zoos thinking the animals are happy, when in all reality they are miserable. You can try to replicate the animals enclosure to their natural habitat, but they can never replace their homes. An animals rights organization states, “Animals are often prevented from doing most of the things that are natural and important to them, like running, roaming, flying, climbing, foraging, choosing a partner, and being with others of their own kind,” (PETA). Although, zoos are said to ‘help’ these animals, they really are not, it is more a collection of different animals in order to show off to the audience and gain money off of them. People begin to believe it is okay to keep these wild animals captive and have their lives be controlled by someone else.

Some also think that the places are rescuing animals from the wild to save their lives. As much as all those people want to look past those bars and see an animal happy that’s not always the case. In a year more than 100 million Americans visit zoos daily and even though more than half of them are against animal captivity, it doesn’t stop them. “I think that animal captivity is okay because they could save some lives of animals but I still think for the most part it is a horrible thing.” (Chelsey Pinegar) I feel as though many people with agree with this statement because we want what’s best for the animal but also for them not to be tortured in any way.
Animals should not be kept in captivity for any reason unless they have been harmed and need to receive treatment but they should be released as soon as they are healthy and capable of taking care of themselves again. The use of a captive animal for research, education, or entertainment is just wrong no creature deserves to have their life taken away for our benefit. Would you want to be captured and put in a tiny box or a fake little ecosystem, or abused and tortured because apparently that’s the only possible way to train an animal? How about just knowing that your real life is over and now all you get to do is put on a show for people? That is what we put these animals through for our entertainment we tear children away from their parents. In what way is that right? It’s just like kidnapping we put humans in jail for that but only when it’s another human. People act like just because they aren’t human that its ok and they lie to themselves telling themselves that its okay and that the animal will be taken care of, fed, and have a nice little “fake” forest or desert to live in. Just think of it as having a zoo full of humans, or stealing other humans to make profit or teach someone something new by doing something totally wrong and unethical.

What most people do not understand is that most of these animals are broken on the inside. Zoos educate all the visitors that come; they let people know everything that they know about the animals on display. Larger animals, such as elephants and orcas (commonly known as killer whales), have trouble with being confined in such a small area. However, many smaller animals benefit from zoos because they provide protection from predators, natural disasters, and poachers. They also benefit from conservation efforts; the babies being born get all the care they could ever need. Some animal rights activists are concerned that the conservation efforts are limiting the gene pool of the species. They argue that the small number of animals able to breed in captivity limits biodiversity and leads to weaknesses in the species overall. Zoos are an unsuitable environment for wild animals and should, therefore, be abolished. Firstly, zoo animals are kept in a very confined area compared with their vast natural habitat. Secondly, breeding programmes are far less successful than zoos claim. Thirdly, zoo animals are exposed to many diseases and other dangers.
The reasons that animals are held in captivity could favor some people and others not. Animals in captivity are usually held for entertainment, education, research, and conservation purposes. The other major reason they are held in captive is the process of rehabilitation. The article, Ethical Issues, defines rehabilitation as the treatment of wild animals found injured or ill, taken into captivity until restored to full health and then returned to the wild. Then when the animal is released they are then able to live freely in their own habitat. Although this may lead to suffering and stress or even death for the animal. The animal is so dependent on their caretaker that once they are put into the wild they do poorly (1).
