In the book by Jacobus, A World of Ideas, Robert Reich wrote the article, “Why the Rich are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer,” and he uses a metaphor to describe the three economic groups that are now in different boats. He compares how the routine producers’ boats and the in-person servers’ boats are sinking while the symbolic analyst is rising. He also discusses how immigration and technology increases competition jobs of routine producers and in-person servers which makes their boats sink , while the symbolic analysts are in great demand. Jobs like being a waiter or waitress that serves other people are called in-person servers. Being a student is also included in this category because they study and serve other people too, such as their teachers,and peers. The only difference is they do not get paid, but they learn from the lessons they are being taught. While being a student, he or she can also get a job in order to save money. Most of the jobs students get are being an in-person server but as students take more courses and after years of studying, they will have the potential to become a symbolic analyst. Students can study whatever courses they want to take. It is their own decision whether they want to be a doctor, nurse, engineer or any other profession. A nurse can be considered as in-person server since they are known to serve patients, but they can also be considered a symbolic analyst, because they still have the chance to become wealthy like any other analysts are. As a nurse, he or she can have associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree. Many people say that having a bachelor’s degree is better so many people takes bachelor’s degree since they think that the more they spend studying, the more knowledge and experience they have. In life, no matter who you are, everyone strives to find a job that makes enough money. In addition, to also make you happy and to feel important. People that fail to do this often lose ambition and the confidence they need to succeed. There are multiple outlets to purse including college, a trades union or construction, and also the military. Unless you are able to get lucky, these are the three most common paths to take in life. Matthew Crawford is a perfect example of this, who is also the author of “The Case for Working with Your Hands.” Crawford got a prestigious degree but ultimately decided that he would be better off working in a motor cycle garage. He is proof that you can find success outside of college if you take the right direction. Anthony Depalma provided a great example in the artile he wrote called “Fifteen Years on the Bottom Rung.” Depalma tells the story of John Zannikos and his former employees where Zannikos came to this country and started a booming restaurant due to luck, not being smarter or craftier then the other immigrants. The other immigrants got left in the dust due to being stuck in a dead end job. Fast food though and other entry level jobs, is not a boulevard of dreams you can find achieve enough to find wealth and peace of mind.
In addition, the writer of “The Benefits of a College Degree” wrote that”One of the most important and obvious reasons to earn a college degree is to increase your earning potential”(“The Benefits”). While it is true that college is indubitably expensive, the years of learning a particular trade or skill for the future of career of these students is important and worth the cost. Also, students can apply for a variety of scholarships for different amounts of money to help pay for college and lower the amount of debt caused by schooling. Furthermore, multiple students believe that a college education is not needed for their future and that they can get good paying jobs without it. This philosophy does not apply to any good paying careers with the exception of the military and some construction jobs. When High-school graduates think that obtaining a B.A. will help them get higher-paying job, they are only narrowly correct. Murray Charles (245) states that “some companies will not consider you at all if you do not have a college degree”. He also stated that many jobs will not even interview you if you do not hold a B.A. degree, having a B.A. degree help enhance your pay”. Why does having a B.A. produce that result? According to Charles, for some jobs, the economic premium for a degree is produced by the actual education that has gone into getting the degree, Murray Charles (245). Charles also stated that “lawyers, physicians, and engineers can earn high incomes deploying knowledge and skills that take years to acquire”. Poverty is still the biggest problem the world faces from day to day. Every country suffers from it to some degree, however certain places are greater effected than others. This is because the level of economic growth differs from country to country. The greater amount of growth the less room there is for poverty. This is simple reason why some countries are richer than others. If countries fail to move forward than it can present many problems. Mainly the needless suffering of many, and generally a lower level of living for all those caught in the trap. It is true that growth does create it own problems such as pollution and congestion, but these are acceptable compromises to reduce the level of poverty. The governments around the world have many policies to try and improve the workings of their economies. Governments will differ in the emphasis they give to particular objectives and the ways in which they try to achieve these. The circumstances around these change from time to time, focusing on certain objectives that need the most influence. Economic growth is an ongoing priority. Governments just have to make sure they manage what resources they have properly, in order to achieve this objective.
For most people who want to pursue and can afford higher education, and also is ready to suffer from debt; the option is always available. Whether it’s to continue on achieving a bachelor’s degree, after gaining a high school diploma, or from a master’s to a PhD; when entering the job market with these degrees, which states that these graduates are certified to work in a specific field; they’ve majored in at a university, college and technical school; the graduates are now looking to be employed at a job that will provide a good salary; this will allow them to make a living for themselves and/or family. The question “Why is there so much poverty in the United States?” has such a broad spectrum of issues. There is no simple cure or single cause of poverty. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, “the 2011 Poverty Guidelines are $10,890 for a single member household and $22,350 for a family of four” (par 13). In addition, “families’ incomes that fall below the threshold given, means that every individual in the household are considered to be in poverty” (par 13). Poverty is too complex an issue to be the result of just one problem, but we can narrow down the subject, to show the effects of how the lack of education can diminish our countries resources and how that has a ripple effect on future generations. Without an education, people receive lower pay; there is an increased rate of crime, and a higher reliance on state and federal aid, which is draining economically.
Contrary to popular belief, a college education can help with any job, regardless of whether the job is within a certain major or not. In fact, a college graduate even benefits if they take up a job as a plumber or a police officer- not only from their academic education, but also from learning important skills such as persistence and discipline (Leonhardt). The report of Robert Reich: “Why the Rich are getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer,” is an eye opener and a warning for society regarding unemployment that it will be facing and is currently facing due to a lack of technology and education. It clearly articulates that the jobs of routine producers and in-person servers have vanished totally as modern techniques have replaced them. The author has stated that the only people whose jobs are on the rise are symbol analysts. As stated in the report, symbol analysts are the real problem solvers. Their skills are highly in demand worldwide because they are the ones who first analyze the problem and then solve it. The Hart Report, on the other hand, also states the same problem of unemployment and the global recession which has left employers focusing on employees not only with specialists’ skills but also a “broader range of skills and knowledge” (page 6-7). The Hart Report clearly reflects what the needs of contemporary employers are, but the question is whether it is the universities or the students themselves who fail to cope with the requirements of the contemporary world which is filled with technological advancement and critical thinking. The way money is distributed within the United States is unbalanced, with the majority of the wealthy owning the bulk of the country’s wealth. Wealth can be defined as a person’s assets and monetary gains. This unequal distribution has caused numerous economic and geographical problems, such as how resources are divided among countries, how developed or industrialized a country is in relation to wealth distribution and the wide spread of disease and lack of medical attention due to an absence of money. In this paper I will address the negative and positive aspects associated with wealth distribution. I will explain how resource distribution contributes to an area’s economic growth. I will also discuss varying ways to measure wealth within and between countries and define and explain the three sectors of the economy. The United States has not seen such staggering figures between the wealthy and the poor since the great depression. In my opinion, many of our countries problems stem from the unequal distribution of wealth.
Many people who go to college understand that their earning potential is increased because of their knowledge and experience. Having a higher earning potential is a great benefit because earning more money is something that people love to do. People understand that they will receive a higher salary than those who only have a high school degree throughout their career; this is because going to college helps to further knowledge of a particular area of study that they have chosen and to broaden the mind to be able to improve communication skills.
A Bachelor’s Degree requires several years of undergraduate school to obtain based upon the institute or field of study. In my opinion, not all jobs should require a Bachelor’s Degree because some jobs are common knowledge that are stepping-stones to higher-level jobs. People who acquire these jobs are generally high school students, people who cannot find jobs with their degrees, or people who never went to college who need a job to support themselves. These part-time jobs should prepare people for the real world; understand the worth of money, the responsibility it comes with and set priorities. It is imperative for people to understand the basis of this before entering an institute to get educated for their higher-paying profession.
