In the book by Jacobus, A World of Ideas, Robert Reich wrote the article, “Why the Rich are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer,” and he uses a metaphor to describe the three economic groups that are now in different boats. He compares how the routine producers’ boats and the in-person servers’ boats are sinking while the symbolic analyst is rising. He also discusses how immigration and technology increases competition jobs of routine producers and in-person servers which makes their boats sink , while the symbolic analysts are in great demand. Jobs like being a waiter or waitress that serves other people are called in-person servers. Being a student is also included in this category because they study and serve other people too, such as their teachers,and peers. The only difference is they do not get paid, but they learn from the lessons they are being taught. While being a student, he or she can also get a job in order to save money. Most of the jobs students get are being an in-person server but as students take more courses and after years of studying, they will have the potential to become a symbolic analyst. Students can study whatever courses they want to take. It is their own decision whether they want to be a doctor, nurse, engineer or any other profession. A nurse can be considered as in-person server since they are known to serve patients, but they can also be considered a symbolic analyst, because they still have the chance to become wealthy like any other analysts are. As a nurse, he or she can have associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree. Many people say that having a bachelor’s degree is better so many people takes bachelor’s degree since they think that the more they spend studying, the more knowledge and experience they have. Employers are more likely to hire someone with a bachelor’s degree but getting either degree will be better than nothing.
