For most people who want to pursue and can afford higher education, and also is ready to suffer from debt; the option is always available. Whether it’s to continue on achieving a bachelor’s degree, after gaining a high school diploma, or from a master’s to a PhD; when entering the job market with these degrees, which states that these graduates are certified to work in a specific field; they’ve majored in at a university, college and technical school; the graduates are now looking to be employed at a job that will provide a good salary; this will allow them to make a living for themselves and/or family. In Yo-Yo Ma’s Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy and Education, he is arguing for the integration of the arts within the already established “STEM”, which he believes should be modified into “STEAM”. I believe the goal of higher education is, to help develop students who have majored in many different subjects to step through the door of life and impact society; also higher education should guarantee the graduates a job upon his or her completion. However, for those who do, they have expectations for what they believe they should be gaining from their educational journey, and what their institution believes they are preparing them for. For Example, I attend Florida Atlantic University, and the reason behind my choosing of this fine institution, is because when researching about the school, I found that it had the resources and the classes to help me pursue my career in medicine. This is beneficial to me, because FAU has programs such as, the pre-health where I was provided with a flight plan which ensures that I know what classes to take and when to take them. Also, the program has an internship towards the end of the program, therefore, the building of relationships and networking with different people with important position, will at some point provide me with guidance and insight regarding my future goals. The vast majority of jobs in America require only vocational training or a skill certificate. People who do not have the aptitude for college should not be forced into thinking college is the only way to be successful in life. Society should encourage students to explore all job options not just the college related ones, because with the way times are changing getting trained from a vocational school is the best option America’s citizens have.
Over the past years, getting a college degree has been the pathway to a settled career. College has been a reason for people to carry on after high school. Now that tuition has been raised, getting a degree seems to drain students with more loans and could be in debt. College has been raised to the point where people rather start working at a minimum wage than continuing with school. Working in a part-time job would be an easier choice rather than pursuing a degree.
Many college graduates are finding it hard to get jobs. The biggest issue is the amount of debt Americans are facing due to the college degree they were told they should have. Colleges have been raising the prices on everything from tuition to books. The government is giving out loans to students without even asking where they’re going to school for, or if they’ll even have a plan to pay off the debt in the future. Noted authors, Brandon Chambers, is quoted saying, “If you are going to fear anything fear success. Think about what you are doing and when you succeed what life you will have.” There are several different reasons why I could stay home, work and not go to college; I could go to work every day and make more money for the house, it’s easier, and I would be less stressed. Now, on the other hand there are many reasons why I should go to school; such as further my education, make my family proud, and make myself proud. I am attending college for several different reasons. One reason is to further my education. I hate feeling like I don’t know something, I like being the person everyone comes to for information. Also, because I want to be better prepared for my major, I want to be better then the next person with the job credentials. I want to major in Social Work and Criminology. I dream to be a counselor or an clinical service social worker. I want to help people who need someone there for them someone who can guide them or even just talk too. My purpose and goals in attending college is to make something of my life. It is a good thing. No one wants to be a nobody. Attending college has helped me see the right benefits that will help me achieve my ultimate dream goals. First of all, I want to be able to learn how to relate to different cultures, ethnicities, and personalities, and also be able to understand different backgrounds, the way people from diverse culture think and act and their lifestyles; In addition, I want to learn how to adapt to new situations including dealing with responsibilities such as using Blackboard and making sure that all my assignments are completed and submitted on time. Furthermore, I will have to learn how to adapt to being an adult and taking care of my own needs.
Meaning that it could potentially be a waste of time since it’s not focusing on what their future is planned on. By not focusing on preparing the student for the job they are planning on doing for their career it makes them feel like they are in need of more schooling to be better prepared or none at all. Along with having to attend more school they are also paying for more classes that have nothing to do with the major they are wanting to accomplish. Even when they assist you with finding a career it is not the one you planned on doing.
