Students are negatively affected by the school day starting so early. High school classes should begin later and end later in the day to accommodate students’ natural sleep clocks. If the school board decided to start the day later, the students would be healthier and more attentive which will improve their academic performance. This will improve the quality of life for everyone involved in the student’s life.
One reason classes should start later is because students need to get enough sleep to have a healthy life. The California Academy of Science says, “Getting enough sleep may lead to a decreased risk of car accidents, less depression and obesity, the prevention of illnesses like colds and flus, and generally improved mental ability”(Should schools start later). Most students are not able to eat breakfast in the morning because they are rushing to get to school on time. Eating breakfast is very important to a teen because people who eat breakfast have a healthier diet overall (Neithercott). It is unhealthy for students to go to sleep late and then wake up early in the morning and go to school. By starting the school day later you

Student’s mood is greatly impacted by how much sleep they are getting. If teens are getting eight or nine hours of sleep compared to only five or six, their moods will be better. Studies show that the more sleep students are getting, the higher their test scores will be. Test scores are higher because the students’ memory consolidation is increased when you are receiving a good amount of sleep. Some negative effects of not sleeping enough include: impaired attention, difficulty retaining information, and difficulty staying awake in class (Should schools start later). If school was started later, less students would be sleeping in class, and they would be paying more attention to what their teacher is
Students may need to nap to compensate for energy expended throughout the day. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, allowing for a larger window of time to spend with their families after school, even with a later start time. Another opposing argument is that students would have less time to participate in extracurricular activities. However, this issue can be resolved by making practices for sports and club meetings shorter and more frequent to accommodate the schedule variation. Overall, the benefits of later start times far outweigh the drawbacks.
How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning, your alarm has already gone off twice, your still laying in bed and your bus comes in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It is a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. While some experts like Dr. Lee Yanku say “It is not the schools starting time that is the problem as to why students don’t get enough sleep, it is because of facebook, myspace and cell phones” The truth behind it is that we can’t budget sports, homework and extracurricular activities into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. This is hurting student’s academic averages and needs to change. Changing the school time will help boost academic averages among students, and isn’t th...
Many people argue that starting schools later will let students get more sleep and align with the students sleep cycles. But they do not factor in that students will just stay up later at night because they know that they do not have to get up as early in the morning. This will just leave students with less sleep than before. Also students will be up later finishing homework and socializing on their phones with friends. Although schools will now have been adjusted to fit with students sleep cycles, that does not mean that the students will actually
Another benefit of later school start times is health benefits for the students. Because of the hormonal
Some people may believe that starting school later wouldn't help kids and would waste money, by really they are wrong because it can give students much needed sleep. When the pros and cons are weighed, It's obvious that schools start time should be later because teens need sleep and it improves grades and test scores. So get out there and let kids sleep
The schools that start classes before 8:00AM, the students are not getting enough sleep at night. In the passage Up For Debate: Should School Start Later It states “Many adolescents suffer from chronic sleep deprivation.” We need the schools to fix this by allowing students to get more sleep by changing the time school starts, to a more reasonable time. Therefore letting the students get the sleep they need to work exceptionally at school. Starting the school day later will also help with the amount of money the school pays for. Starting later would be most beneficial for schools around the world.
The number one reason why school should start later because of teen’s health and safety. Nation's pediatricians, “say that middle and high school start class before 8:30 am threatens children's health, safety, and academic performance. Dr.Cora Breuner said, “we truly believe that our teenagers are getting six to seven hours of sleep a night and they need eight to ten hours”. Right
Now they start at 8:40. Students' grades are better, there is less tardiness and absenteeism, and students participate more and sleep less in class.” This quote shows again how students get better grades if they go to a school that starts later in the morning. In the aticle “Why you should let your teenager sleep in” ,it says, “In 2009, a study of 3,000 Houston children aged 11 to 17 found that students getting less than six hours of sleep a night were twice as likely to report poor grades upon follow-up a year later.” When students get less than six hours of sleep a night they can have a hard time concentrating and staying focused.
If the start times for schools changed to a later time, everybody would be happier. Most people like the sound of sleeping in on a school day. It would be good if kids got to sleep in before school. Lets say one night you get home late from a baseball game and you go to bed around 10:30, you'd have about 10 hours of sleep until you have to get up for school. Ten hours is really good for anybody who has a full day ahead of them.
Later school times will keep students wide awake so they can function properly to help them on what they want to do when they grow up. School starting later is a good idea because it will benefit the health of teens, it will help teens do better in school with their
IF schools started later we wouldn't have all these tired and groggy students coming to school we would have students that are refreshed and ready to learn. We will have students that have good grades. We will have students who have better test scores. And we will have students with overall better performance. I what you right now pick up your phone and call your district and say we want later start
School is a very important aspect in young adults’ life, if it is college or high school, succeeding can greatly benefit them in the long run. It is only fair that they get a chance to do their best, and to do their best, sleep is necessary. Making school start times later would allow students and teachers to come to school refreshed and energized and ready to take on the day. Along with increased participation also comes a better learning environment. Later school start times have shown so many benefits that it is confusing as to why schools around the nation do not participate and join the
For me personally, I like school, I just don’t like waking up early. I’m sure that’s the case with lots of other students too. If school started later, then students would be able to sleep in like it’s a weekend. Students wouldn’t fall asleep in school as much and the main reason why students fall asleep in school is because they are sleep deprived, not because they find the topic boring, although sometimes that is the case but most of the time it isn’t. After the time changes, students said that they were even more tired.
Studies have proven that students will be more punctual, attend school more often, pay more attention and be engaged in class. A. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most students get, on average, 7 hours of sleep when they are supposed to be getting 8.5 and 9.25 hours per night. It is biologically proven that it is difficult for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 p.m. and wake up before 8 a.m. (American Academy of Pediatrics).
School days starting later would help improve student attendance by a lot! For example, a copious amount of students oversleep which results in lateness to school. However, if school started at least one to two hours later, then the students perhaps will not be late, and as a result, they can...
