Many high schoolers, throughout the history of high school education, have found it hard to believe why it is important to study what seems to them like random literature. They ask questions like when will this ever apply to my life, what’s the point of reading this and why can’t we read something funny for once. Despite the hostility towards serious works of literature, I find it very important to study these great pieces of work written throughout history. I find that once you spend the time to really study the great writings of people such as Shakespeare, you can find many meaningful lessons that can apply to anyone's life. One of the most common topics that authors write about is love. This however, is one of the greatest writings of love ever. Not only is it an important piece because it is filled with literary devices such as similes and metaphors that are important tools to use when writing to help describe the object or situation to the reader, but it is also a testament of what true love really means. One impressive metaphor included in A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning reads, “If they be two, they are two so as stiff twin compasses are two; thy soul the fixed foot, makes no show to move, but doth, if th’other do.” (Lines 25-28) In this quote Donne is comparing the love he and his wife share to the legs of a compass, something seemingly random yet very applicable. It makes anyone who has truly studied it, realise what true love is, and if they are in a relationship, make them realise if what they have is true love or not. Some of the most touching lines in Donne’s A …show more content…

Many people today don’t even realise how much this one piece of literature is impacting their own lives. Milton’s Paradise Lost reads, “Th' infernal Serpent; he it was, whose guile stirred up with Envy and Revenge, deceiv'd The Mother of Mankind, what time his Pride Had cast him out from Heav'n, with all his Host Of Rebel Angels, by whose aid aspiring to set himself in Glory above his Peers, He trusted to have equal'd the most High, if he oppos'd; and with ambitious aim against the Throne and Monarchy of God rais'd impious War in Heav'n and Battel proud with vain attempt.” (Lines 34-44) This text was iconic in it’s time and still is today. Milton describes for the first time ever, the war that occurred in Heaven, the story of how Satan was cast out and down to Hell and how he is now The Devil who tempts everyone to do bad and does nothing but evil because of his desire for vengeance. This answered the ultimate question of why God lets bad things happen in this life f he is a God of love. This is also important because it goes to show the impact literature has on society. Milton wanted to show that our Heavenly father is a God of love, but Satan, however
