Amendment 1 Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition Amendment I is a very important piece in our Constitution. The first amendment states that the citizens of the United States have right to practice what ever religion they please, speak up for what they think, the freedom to be in the press, and the freedom of creating an assembly focused on a cause. The first amendment is present in today's society but in different ways then when the amendment was written. Freedom of religion is present in today's society. People form new religions and join religions all the time. Freedom of speech, assembly, and petition are present in today's society also, but in a different ways then before. In today's society these freedoms are present on the Internet. The Internet allows citizens to speak for what they believe in create assembly's and petitions all online. One example of this is brought up on the Washington Post. The first amendment rights allows people to speak in support for groups such as ISIS and form support groups, all which can be done on the Internet. This amendment is in the constitution because of the kings law of "a man shall be free from arrest except by lawful judgement of his peers or by the law of the land." This law created the concept to amendment 5. In today's society this amendment is still applied to today's society. These are the same rights that are given to every citizen going through a court case. Because these are the same rights given to citizens in the past and present, it makes amendment 5 still applicable in today's
