“The deaf community comprises those deaf and hard of hearing individuals who share a common language, common experiences and values, and a common way of interacting with each other, and with hearing people” (Ladd). Each individual in the documentary, Deaf Teens: Hearing World by Claire Braden, venture into new stages of their lives where they face challenges that emerge with stepping out into the hearing word. The director, Claire Braden, uses a variety of camera angles along with the use of sound in order to emphasize the lifestyles of members in the deaf culture. While deaf individuals remain misunderstood among the general hearing community, this documentary successfully shows the sincere insights of the deaf who ultimately search for acceptance in the hearing world in hopes of changing any presumptions. The director uses sound in various different scenes in order to accentuate disparities between the circumstances of a hearing and a deaf individual. The documentary commences by initially projecting faint music playing in the background as Christinanah, a deaf teenager featured in the film, wears her hearing aids where then the music becomes audibly louder. Right from the beginning, the director puts the audience into a deaf individual’s perspective. This example effectively demonstrates an aspect of how a profoundly deaf individual depends on some sort of aid in order to understand and reason with others in society. Furthermore, similarly to this scene, we meet two other teenagers, Asher and Sara, who rather rely on the lack of sound which the director emanates from the scene. The director captures the sincere point of views of the teenagers featured in the documentary in order to allow the audience to acknowledge the abilities of a deaf individual without society drawing any conclusion. To sum it all up, in the documentary, Deaf Teens: Hearing World, the director, Claire Braden effectively presents the sincere insights of a few deaf individuals who intentionally hope to change any presumptions society concludes about their deafness.
