Ever since the election of George Washington, American men have been chosen by the people to guide the United States into becoming a successful nation. Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ), the thirty sixth president was such a man. The assertive Democrat held the title of John F. Kennedy’s Vice President until Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. From 1963-1969, Johnson demonstrated his powerful leadership skills in attempt of improving and advancing America (Buller 44). Although LBJ had a substandard reputation for foreign affairs, his strong domestic policies allowed for him to be an effective president of the United States. The first of many policies Johnson established for the well-being of the nation was the Great Society Program. LBJ’s successful proposal was composed of a series of miniature programs designed to Because the United States government did not wish to barter with communist countries, they did everything in their power to prevent the spread communism in counties (Faber and Faber 234). This was the main cause of the Vietnam War. Under many circumstances did Johnson attempt to negotiate peace with Ho Chi Minh, the president of North Vietnam at the time, however all endeavors failed. Instead purusing peace, the United States military dropped bombs on North Vietnam in February of 1965. Instead of engaging in more violence, Johnson chose to consult for peace with the Vietnam government in April of 1965 (Faber and Faber 233). Since all attempts of peace failed once again, Johnson proceeded to send thousands of troops to Vietnam. The Vietnam was the reason why Johnson became such a controversial president. After sending a great deal of young soldiers across the sea to never return truly infuriated thousands of people. He also arraigned a team of sociologist, psychologist and pediatricians including pediatrician Dr. Robert Cooke of John Hopkins University. Johnson and his crew worked rigorously to develop a program to help America’s children overcome the obstacle of poverty. The name head start was chosen as a representation of the gap that is ever present between middle class and lower class children academically and the ideal that this program would give underprivileged children a much needed head start on education and over all wellbeing.

They have to decide what to make of this man who, in his life, ranged from a confident young senator, a triumphant president, a defeated, tired leader, to ultimately just an old man hoping his story will live on.

North Vietnam came under the control of the Vietnamese Communists who had opposed France and aimed for a unified Vietnam under Communist rule. Vietnamese who had collaborated with the French controlled the South. For this reason the United States became involved in Vietnam because it believed that if all of the country fell under a Communist government, Communism would spread throughout Southeast Asia and further. This belief was known as the domino theory. The decision to enter Vietnam reflected America¡¦s idea of its global role-U.S. could not recoil from world leadership. The U.S. government supported the South Vietnamese government. The U.S. government wanted to establish the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO), which extended protection to South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos in case of Communist subversion. SEATO, which came into force in 1955, became the way which Washington justified its support for South Vietnam; this support eventually became direct involvement of U.S. troops. In 1955, the United States picked Ngo Dinh Diem to replace Bao Dai as head of the anti-Communist regime in South Vietnam. Eisenhower chose to support Ngo Dinh Diem. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Mass., on May 29, 1917. Kennedy graduated from Harvard University in 1940 and joined the Navy the next year.
