People have had cars since the 1800s and have used them to simply get from point A to point B. According to Bartosz Sułkowski, there are over 1.2 billion cars in the world and by 2035 there will be over 2 billion. To put that into perspective about 1/7th of the world population has a car. However, since the 1800s cars have come along way. The primary function of getting from point A to point B has gone out the window. Cars today are being built for all different kinds of functions. Anywhere from a comfortable daily commute to be able beat a military jet in closed race course for fun. There are rumors roaming around claiming that people do not want driverless cars. In “The Path to Driverless Cars” Brian Markwalter says that consumers do not want driverless cars. “Furthermore, a recent Kelley Blue Book poll found that 51% of drivers want to have full control of their vehicles, even if self-driving cars make our roads safer. Media stories about these studies often have headlines that suggest consumers do not want self-driving cars, when in reality the concern is about control”(Marlwalter). The fact of the matter is that the rumors are false people are not against driverless cars they are just concerned with controlling the car. Usually older people are the ones that are more concerned about the control of cars. Younger people are more receptive of driverless cars. The drivers of the trucks will directly be affected with the introduction of driverless cars. In fact, truck drivers, cab drivers, and bus drivers are only a number of people who will be affected by self-driving cars. When autonomous driving reaches a commercial level a lot of people may be out of a job. Tesla has already made a semi-truck. For right now a driver will be needed in that truck but in the future the driver may not be needed and than that truck driver is out of a job. In the future self-driving cars will affect the employment rate as they will cause a lot of people to lose their jobs. Gary Petty talks about this in his article “Truck Pilots of Tomorrow”, he says, “In the recently published book titled Driverless: Intelligent Cars and the Road Ahead, authors Hod Lipson and Melba Kurman predict that "every disruptive technology has a dark side, and millions of truck drivers and taxi drivers will lose their job" as a result of driverless vehicles”(Petty). Petty explains that with the positive progression of autonomous driving there is a negative side where people lose their jobs.
