My motivation to serve as a Peace Corp volunteer and my desire to work in the field of international health and development stems from my childhood interests and my academic concentration. Early on in my life I realized that I cherish being of service to others. While working to vaccinate youth for Polio in Nigeria, I was eager to help individuals and families improve their health and overall wellbeing. Furthermore, I love working with children and helping them through the numerous difficulties and barriers associated with being a child, especially in the developing world. I realized this passion when I worked as a highschool teacher in Brazil. During my first year of teaching, I was approached by numerous students asking for support. After much reflection, I eventually realized that although I can't end war, I can help vulnerable populations that have been affected by war. That is exactly what I hope to spend my life doing and I am confident that Peace Corp service will better prepare me to serve the international community. The reason why I feel confident serving as a Peace Corp volunteer is because I have experience working and living in the developing world. I understand that international experience is not something that comes easily. I think back to the first time I was mugged by a man with a machete while living in Brazil. I also remember the very real threat of Boko Haram in the North of Nigeria. It is through these diverse experiences that I have become familiar with the international environment.
