Back in 2009 when I decided to go back to school was the hardest decision I ever had to make. It all started with the St. Croix Career & Technical Center where I went to study Certified Nursing Assistant, I graduated in 2010. I started searching for jobs. The hospital I currently working at laid off 70+ CNA’s and LPN’s around that same time, so my job hunt wasn’t successful. Throughout that year I was thinking very hard to realize what I wanted next. Again I started to believe furthering my education wasn’t for me. I took a long break to think. Then I realize that all this time I was going to school I didn’t’ had a motive as to why I want to get a degree. One day I sat down and wrote down what’s my motive. So I started to write “My motive for going back to school is to get a higher paying position in the hospital I work at. I started school hunting, after searching and searching I ended up at Capella University. While filling out the application I got nervous just thinking about my past experiences. When I reach the assessment portion, I failed. That gave me cold feet and giving up became an option. I got a called from my enrollment advisor, we talk for a while and she gave me the option to go to Sophia to get a college credit. I think back on the classes I took at UVI, so I requested my transcript from the school and was able to get at least one (1) college credit. Now I’m here at Capella furthering my education. Going back to school at 30 is not the same as going back to school at 20, especially when you’re a single parent with an established career. Returning to school never left my mind throughout the years, I received my associates seven years ago and between then and now a lot had changed. So many questions I asked myself; do I have the time, who can help watch my daughter, can I juggle another load, etc. I answered every one of my questions; unfortunately I gave myself excuses instead. The decision going back to school was overwhelming because it was taking up another full time job; making it a priority and possibly putting in overtime to study and do homework.
I began to look at college as a fresh start of life. I had the opportunity to change anything I want about myself. However, the day before leaving, I wanted to change my mind, I no longer wanted to leave everything that I have known for my entire life. But, I refused to show my new feelings because I knew it was a common feeling among other college bound freshman. After some tears and deep breathes, I realized I always wanted to go away to school and if I backed out, I would regret my decision for the rest of my life.
After graduation of my high school, I’ve decided not to attend college. I spent over three months preparing for college admissions. Over three months of studying for the SAT and writing essays for colleges. But, all this hard work was blown away in just a week. The week before the May 1st, the decision day, I had made my decision not to attend college. I have decided to return to my country and start working. Of course, there was a strong disagreement from my parents, but I didn’t hesitate. For the past years, I have worked in many different kinds of places and I have faced the true reality. This made me want to attend college and brought me to Concordia College.
Elementary School teacher, a professional educator for grades k-5, is a career I wish to pursue because I want to teach children the building blocks of education, love the energy and excitement that younger children give off, and want to be able to help children with special challenges. I have wanted to be an elementary school teacher for about three years now, I knew I wanted to pursue this occupation because there are many benefits to being an educator, and have always worked with children well. Goyne. Session1.Journal I want to go back to school to finish my Elementary education degree to become a teacher and work with Special Needs Students. I know what it is like for some of the special needs students because I used to be one myself. I have always loved school and it was hard because I did not learn the same way as my classmates. I was always behind and I would ask help from the teacher but they would tell me that they were to busy and come back after school for help.
The life I have had so far has taught me a lot about academic and life skills; from when I was about six to the age I am now. I am always learning and happy to learn new things. I might not know what I want right now, but I do know that I want something for my life; I want to go to college, so I could make the future I see happen. As you 're reading this you 're probably asking yourself why? Why does going and graduating college mean so much to her? What makes her different from all the others? Well, to answer all those questions you would have to continue reading as I explain some of the moments in my life, in which they brought me to the conclusion that I have to go to college.
Until this past spring I hadn't thought much about what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go for college. One day in the spring the junior class had a meeting in the auditorium about taking our ACT test and college plans. After that meeting I realized I needed a change, getting into college wasn't going to be a breeze, kind of how I had treated high school. Although I always considered myself to be fairly smart, I never had put much effort into school, but after seeing the facts and requirements to get into schools, and especially after hearing Ms. Rice saying "In today's world, the way to a successful future, is choosing college as your future", I knew I had to make an adjustment for the better so that college could be my future.
A high school diploma is practically just a piece of paper anymore. You must have a college degree in order to get a well-paying job. Sure you can go into the labor force right out of high school, but you may only be making $40,000 a year. That much money may sound like a lot, but in reality it is not. People with a college degree tend to make twice that amount, if not three or four times that amount of money a year.
As a college student, who looking for building a career through higher education, decisions that I have made have had a lot of effect on my path. Decisions that mostly benefited me and sometimes had led me to tough situations and made me feel that I got burned out. This semester is going to be an example of bad decisions that I made in my entire college experience. I thought I can handle multiple courses and labs along with my working schedule. however I tried, but my plans did go as well as I expected. Although, dropping some of them, helped not to feel such a burden but it was too late. So I got behind but never gave up. Without a good spirit, I started back on. The path I have taken toward obtaining my Bachelor of Science Degree in Business, Management, and Economics, with a concentration in Marketing, has been different than I expected when I first started college. I started at Brooklyn College at 17-years-old and frankly, I wasn’t ready for it. I struggled to balance an awkward schedule of classes and inconsistent study habits. I never felt completely comfortable there and after two years of performing poorly, I enrolled at Kingsborough Community College. I viewed it as a new start and seized the opportunity. I decided to major in Business Administration; I made the Dean’s List, and saw my grades improve dramatically. After completing 74 total credits, I decided I was ready to return to a four-year-college. I initially considered returning to Brooklyn College but at this time my grandmother had become ill. I applied to the College of Staten Island which was near her home and would make it possible for me to help her out with whatever she needed and attend school locally. This worked out great for my first semester. I carried a 3.47 GPA and decided to major in Business, with a concentration in Marketing. At this time, I was working part-time while in school. But due to certain circumstances, I was forced to obtain a full-time job in addition to other part-time commitment. This made it very difficult for me to enroll in classes as most of the upper-level marketing classes that I needed for graduation were only offered during the day when I would now be working. I enrolled in night and weekend classes for the next two semesters but my grades began to suffer. I never would have thought I would go back to school. Especially at my age. Not that age should be a factor in doing anything. I guess I did not have enough self-confidence in myself. It could have been the environment I grew up in. One reason I had decided to go back was to help others. Another reason I enrolled in college was to gain more knowledge. And the third reason I enrolled was to have a better future. But one day, I woke up and made a promise to myself that I would never be in an abusive relationship. Well life doesn’t always go the way we plan it to go.
I have been a student at Hocking College for some time now. When I first started at Hocking I wanted to be a Natural Resources Law Enforcement Officer. After completing several quarters I decided that enforcing the law was not my true desire. I then decided to try nursing. My father is a Doctor and I thought that I would be a good nurse. After completing a couple semesters in Nursing I decided that I could not change the medical field and that I could not be a part of it. My goal now is to complete an Associate of Arts and Transfer to a four year College to hopefully get a degree in business or finance with the hopes of opening my own business. Unfortunately, I now have to redo some of my generals in order to transfer them to a four year university. That is how I find myself sitting here today. I have always loved writing, it has always been an outlet for me. I was not thrilled that I was going to be in a writing class once again, but I quickly found out that I had more to learn. The instructors were phenomenal and offered guidance and challenges to me the learner. They challenged me to think about my writing and to write from the heart and the soul.
I grew up constantly seeing my parents suffer from choices they made when they were freshly graduated from high school. They always told me to go to college so I wouldn’t have to suffer from the same mistakes they made and I was going to do just that. I decided to take on the student loan debt and continue my education because I refused to settle immediately in life.
College is a very important thing. If you go to college you will most likely get better pay in your career. Also, with a college degree, you have more opportunities. I believe that everyone should go to college. If you don’t go to college and just go into some job and that fails then you have no backup plan. A college graduate is more likely to be offered employment than another who didn’t attend college, if you have a college degree you will make more money in your lifetime than someone who doesn’t have a degree, if you are considering having children having a college degree is very beneficial to them, you have a higher chance of having better health yourself, college is very beneficial, and if you go to college you will have a better social
Schools can give responsibility to students but never without a cost. Students should have to chance to prove their worth to schools and show how responsible they can be as adults. When students go to college classes as high schoolers they sometimes tend to have more free time during those times. If a child has enough responsibility to take those classes they should have enough to leave school and be trusted to come back to school after their free time is over. Although leaving school early is not something that is smiled upon it should be because some students are ahead and can work their schedule to allow extra time because of hard work in early years.
