Nina Wellman Russell Ultrasound Technician I’m very interested in going to school and studying to be an ultrasound technician. This position varies depending on what location you work at. In a hospital setting it can vary anywhere from looking at the stomach, heart, liver, joints, muscles, tendons and blood vessels. How the ultrasound machine (sonogram) works is it’s high rate sound waves to detect what’s going on in the body, not only on humans but a lot of different living organisms depending on the situations. In order to become an ultrasound technician you need to advance your schooling beyond high school. It really just depends on what you are willing to do. You can go to college anywhere …show more content…
At the lowest paying rate it would be $20.00 the max pay is usually $39.00 an hour. It just depends if they are in high demand for ultrasound technicians in the area. The higher the demand the more you’ll usually get paid. Also pay increases the more experience/schooling you have received. Over time can be at a max of $56.45 an hour. Your total annual pay can be anywhere from $41,000.00- $82,000.00 a year. If you happened to be asked to be asked to travel they will pay you a high wage for traveling expenses, but it’s very rare you travel unless you specifically noted you were able to do so. Your uniform does need to be scrubs. Depending on the location of where the employee may work they may have color coded scrubs like in a hospital setting but if it’s at a more laid back small town clinic it may not be a strict dress code as to of a specific color or type of scrub pants/tops. Being an ultrasound technician can be a high pressure job at times. For instance announcing there’s no heartbeat to a mother of her unborn child, or if they need to an ultrasound done urgently to see if something has ruptured or been broken within the body. In those cases it would be a high pressure/ intensity job. But a lot of the times again depending on your job site depends on what situations you are going to have to
In addition to the hospital, there are a great deal of opportunities for experienced ultrasound techs to work in privately owned physician offices or diagnostic imaging clinics. Higher salaries are predominantly obtainable to ultrasound technicians who have increased experience; earn bachelor’s or master’s degrees; take on executive or management roles; or complete advanced specializations. According to the National Bureau of Labor Statistics the average pay for an ultrasound technician in 2010 was $70,880 per year (or $34.08 per hour) which is significantly more than the national average wage of $41,673 per year or $20 per hour. A sonographer salary is usually backed by a benefits package with some items paid in full by the employer and others partially funded. Employer benefits often include paid vacation and sick time, disability and life insurance, even continuing education. Moderately financed aid also contains health and dental insurance for diagnostic medical sonographers and their families as well as 401k or 403b retirement plans that cover matching employer contributions.
I have always been fascinated with the medical field ever since I was little, my first choice for electives were always health science and anatomy classes. After my cousin, Deanna, had her first child and receive her first ultrasound, I knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The ultrasound technician had made her feel so comforted and just made the entire experience enjoyable for everyone; I’m eager to be able to start my life with a job that I know I will love. Anytime that I meet someone who is in the field themselves, I always ask questions and listen to what they do throughout the day to get some real insight on what being a technician really entails.

I shadowed radiographers in various sections of the hospital in the radiography department x-ray, CT, MRI, Intervention. From this I learned that there is a lot more to radiography and that there is so much you can do and progress with this career and that every day you are faced with new cases. In the A&E x-ray department I noticed that there was a updated digital X-ray model the radiographers used which developed the diagnostic images immediately on the computer screen, instead of having to process the images through another machine like the older machines. This saved significant amount of time and allowed for more immediate and thus effective treatment. I found this very interesting as I am enthusiastic and prepared to work with the latest technology and to learn new skills as techniques to develop good observational skills.

They usually work a regular 40-hour week, and some can work overtime. Techs who work for a medical lab that serves in-home clients may also have to travel to perform certain duties for work. Sonographers spend much of their day moving around from room to room in a medical setting or in various patient care settings. They usually wear scrubs and tennis shoes because of the environment they are in. They spend much of the typical day on their feet. Techs also commonly have to lift or move the imaging equipment themselves or with other care providers. Ultrasounds are often completed in dim or darkly-lit rooms to allow for easier on-screen visibility of images. While techs often get to share in the joy of pregnancy when completing ultrasounds, they also periodically experience the stress of patients and family members struggling with health
The dream that I most desire in life is to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I’ve always had an interest in the inner workings of the human body, but I also value life, and care for others, and my happiness is the happiness of others. Although this career has its bumps on the road just to see mothers face light up when they see the image of their unborn baby is such a breath taking experience. This all originated from going to one of my sisters’ ultrasound appointment that I ended up going to all my sisters’ ultrasound appointments. I believe becoming a diagnostic medical sonographer is something I can do because I have what it takes. Diagnostic medical sonographer is imaging modality that can work in conjunction with other imaging modalities
In general, ultrasound waves produced by an instrument called transducer are sent into a patient. Some of the waves are absorbed, but the other portion of these waves are reflected when tissue and organ boundaries are encountered. The echoes produced by the reflected waves are then picked up by the transducer and translated in a visible picture often referred to as ultrasound. In the paragraphs that follow, the physics of how the transducer functions, what the ultrasound waves do, and how the image is formed will be explained.
Although being academically smart is an important factor for this program, there are also other qualities that are just as important if not more. Some of those qualities that can make you an exceptional sonographer are being compassionate, caring, and being able to work well with others. The reason why I said this is because I believe “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care” (John C. Maxwell). Also it’s critical that you understand the concept of teamwork and that you can work well with others. In this field you need to work with doctors and other caregivers to deliver the best care for the patient. I can assure you that if you give me this opportunity to study in this great program, you will not be disappointed, but in fact be pleased, because I will do whatever it takes to complete this program successfully and become a great diagnostic medical sonographer. I thank you very much for taking the time to read
Many people rush through their daily life without contemplating their actions, thereby missing vast opportunities for achievement. They waste valuable time engaging in frivolous matters instead of putting their energies towards more productive and meaningful purposes. In the words of the Dalai Lama: “Life is not about acquiring money and other facilities; it is about dedicating your life to helping others as much as you can.” The immeasurable value of helping others has been engrained in me since childhood. As a result of my own difficult family circumstances, I have become more sensitive, kind and mindful towards others and their own situations. I have developed a passion for helping others, which, in combination with a proclivity towards medicine has lead to my descion to become a Physician Assistant. I want to live a life where I can provide healthcare and aid to anyone who needs.
