Introduction: Autonomous cars are arguably the most significant innovation in transportation since automobiles were first invented in the 1880s. It is evident that these innovations decrease upon the number of car crashes, however, one can ponder upon the limitations of this benefit. In fact, Patrick Lin, an author of the book “Why Ethics Matters for Autonomous Cars,” explored an interesting scenario that revealed the ethical issues related to self-driving cars. He states that, “Imagine in some distant future, your autonomous car encounters this terrible choice: it must either swerve left and strike an eight-year old girl or swerve right and strike an 80-year old grandmother” (Lin, 2016). The car has three choices, hit the child, elderly woman, or hit both. One may say that it would be more justifiable to hit the elderly woman because she has lived a full life. A self-driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart decisions on the road. In the past years, automobile companies have begun to introduce advanced driver assistance systems that are capable of parking, switching lanes, and braking in case of an emergency on their own, without the driver’s assistance. Recently, the transport company Über released a small group of self-driving cars in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This breakthrough in technology seems to be something a million years away, but there are people already experiencing the thrills of a self-driving car. However, this car was not achieved without years and years of the greatest minds in multiple fields congregating together and scrutinizing each and every model. The only way this was created was through an abundance of conflict and sleepless nights.
Since the advent of autonomous technology, self-driving cars have been expected to be the best solution to optimizing daily commuting efficiency meanwhile significantly reducing or even preventing traffic accidents and fatality by rectifying and removing possible human errors on the road. As the deeper research goes on, however, the ethics of driverless cars become a major concern: self-driving cars must make their own decisions at any circumstances, which also means that such vehicles must be pre-programmed to respond ethically to certain emergencies. The autonomous automobile is able to maneuver around objects and create swift lines of cars on roadways (How Google’s self-Driving Car Works, 2011). The autonomous vehicle can react faster than humans can, meaning less accidents and the potential to save thousands of lives. Another purpose and vision for these cars is that vehicles would become a shared resource. When someone needed a car, he or she could just use his or her Smartphone and a self-sufficient car would drive up and pick him or her up.
With self-driving cars on the horizon for the average consumer, an ethical dilemma is made apparent. Who is to blame in the advent of an accident involving a car that drives itself? There are many situations in which the car could make a “wrong” judgement call based off of its internal decision models. The problem occurs when the decision the car makes differs from what the average person would consider a good moral choice. A current issue relates to who is responsible for an assisted driving accident, when the car attempts to save the driver or a pedestrian, and the other issue involves self-driving cars and the responsibility of computer model decisions.
In normal automobile operation, the number of incidents where the driver has to choose between two options that both involve killing innocents is practically zero. So, while manufacturers may find clever solutions to these more extreme ethical dilemmas, and while lawyers and lawmakers may find a way to limit the carmakers’ liability, there are a number of ethical problems that self-driving cars may face that neither the manufacturers, the programmers, or the lawyers will consider. That is—while programmers may find ways to encode their explicit, idealized ethical rulesets into the cars, and even if these rulesets are (somehow) universally correct, and everyone agrees that its decisions are perfect—all humans have implicit biases, prejudices, and heuristics. These are unconscious, yet reflected in all of our actions. Troublingly, because they are unconscious, they are often also unacknowledged.
In July 12, The New York Times reported a news: “Inside the self-driving Tesla fatal accident”, which again caused enormous debates on whether self-driving cars should be legal or not.
Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.
Autonomous Cars Hit the Road Recent headlines have been awash with news of unmanned and self-driven vehicles. Even a year ago, the idea of autonomous cars roaming on the streets was deemed to be farfetched. Google’s self-driving’ cars and Tesla’s autopilot system are examples of emerging prevalence of auto-driving. Nevertheless, moving from drawing board to the streets, there is considerable progress towards innovation within the automotive field has created cleaner, safer, and more affordable cars.
Self-driving cars are the wave of the future. There is much debate regarding the impact a self-driving car will have on our society and economy. Some experts believe fully autonomous vehicles will be on the road in the next 5-10 years (Anderson). This means a vehicle will be able to drive on the road without a driver or any passengers. Like any groundbreaking technology, there is a fear of the unforeseen problems. Therefore, there will need to be extensive testing before anyone can feel safe with a vehicle of this style on the road. It will also take time for this type of technology to become financially accessible to the masses, but again alike any technology with time it should be possible.
