Why Does God Exist

In this paper, four competing hypotheses as to the most plausible explanation for the beginning of the universe will briefly be presented and engaged with. After initially clarifying some terminology I will first establish that there are both scientific and philosophical reasons for accepting the notion of an absolute beginning over a past eternal universe. Next, I will interact with Lawrence Krauss’ two versions of “nothing” and speculation of a multiverse as possible suggestions for what that first cause might be and demonstrate the logical inadequacy with this approach, and by extension all other non-metaphysical theories. Last, it will be determined that, due to the logical contradictions inherent in physical explanations, one is epistemically justified in postulating a metaphysical deistic god as the Necessary Being responsible for the material cause of the universe.

Introduction
The initial starting point of whether God exists depends largely upon the concept of a necessary being acting as the first cause, and grounding of all other reality. This leads to the question of whether there are respectable reasons for concluding that such a being exists, and if there are, can it be …show more content…

Both adhere to the above description, but are differentiated by the following. Physical necessity is concerned with what can be described only within the material world(s). It is considered a brute fact that nature exists, and must act in accordance with physical laws, while requiring no further explanation beyond its material existence. By contrast, a metaphysical necessity will be defined as “what must be the case” even though its denial is not a strict logical contradiction (strict logical necessity). It is thought to both transcend and be the very grounding of all physical
