On April 9, 2016, 60 minutes aired the interview of Bill Whitaker with Joerg Jesse, a psychologist and the director of prisons in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. He explains that the main objective of the German prison system is rehabilitation; restoring prisoners back into a normal life. Specifically, he claims that the goal is to integrate prisoners into the community; teaching them alternate methods when approaching to situations and a life without further violations. As the interviewee said, “The real goal is reintegration into society, train them to find a different way to handle their situation outside, life without further crimes, life without creating new victims, things like that.” Jesse asserts that this system of counseling and training is the cause of better results in crime rates decreasing and prisons spending less money; …show more content…

In my view, it is clear that the usage of reinstating prisoners into a normal standardized life had proven to work tremendously with German prisoners bringing positive ramifications. The treatment that is provided for each inmate has displayed that rehabilitation works and has executed Germany to spend less money on their prisons. Some might object to the fact that the German system is too lenient on its prisoners and criminals are left off the hook too easily, of course, on the grounds that there are some prisoners that are too dangerous to be released. Yet I would argue that their system is commanded and protected by the highest court and hindering crimes with counseling has manifested into a low recidivism rate. Overall I believe that Germany should continue rehabilitation in their prisons given that it has statically gave quality results in crime and expenses, and therapy has been a worthy concept for the German prison system – an important point given that counseling is better than using cruel tactics to solve a
