Social media, in turn, should not damage or harm the public trust and confidence if anything should improve it. A fair and balanced use of social media is important for the police. For instance “Missing White Girl Syndrome”—the disproportionate media coverage of these particular victims (Neely, Cheryl 2015a, 11) can start to chip away at the public trust. This is because what the police posts on social media as they won't be seen as unbiased if they only cherry pick which group their social media will cover. In the last 5 years or so we have had so many police scandals arise and become the central eye of the news and papers. In 2015 we now have a massive rise with social media and usually are the first to get any information and or video. Every time the news comes on or anything related to media we will get new information or see tmz has the first video of it happening. Social media is the fastest way to get anything on the web or the news within hours. Scandals that I can think of off the top of my head are Kelly Thomas beating from Fullerton PD, Sheriff Lee Baca scandal involving jail violence among inmates, and tons and tons of scandals involving police beatings and the amount of force used. There is still a lot of research to be done on this topic and data to be collected, there is ample amount of ways that this can be done whether it is done by surveys, in house research, face to face or any one of the many other options that are available, it should be done. The results should be reviewed and changes made in the areas where current policies are not working in a manner befitting a police officer or their department. Good communication is essential to how well police officers interact with the public because it influences how the public responds to officers. Listening, speaking, writing and focusing on what others say are all ways officers can affect the way the public views them. A lack of these vital communications skills results in poor understanding, an officer not knowing how to proceed, and people who need police assistance giving up. Officers must also consider how communication might affect a community’s reaction. It is obvious that these traits are very important for optimal police work. Experiences show that people react more calmly and cooperatively when police officers treat them well. Therefore, good communication is needed in order to make the jobs of police officers easier and more positive.

The police are required to enforce the law, maintain order, and provide community service. Given each of these factors, law enforcement needs community trust and cooperation of the public to be truly successful. If trust and respect for the police are gained through good public relations, citizens are more likely to be responsive to police efforts. While many officers are there to be a positive role model, there are always going to be a few bad apples affecting the public relations component.
