Montresor has much pride in his knowledge of fine wine. Fortunato's pride at fine wine makes him think he is the best at wine tasting. Montresor uses this pride as a plan of revenge throughout “The Cask Of Amontillado.” The title of the story is “The Cask Of Amontillado.” It was written by Edgar Allen Poe. The story takes place during carnival season in Italy. The main character, Montresor has much pride in his family name. Fortunato insults his family name and throughout the story he is luring Fortunato into his revenge.In many ways throughout the story, Montresor is using different ways of getting revenge on Fortunato for his insult. He got rid of him in “expert ways.” When Montresor and Fortunato get down into the vaults, Montresor keeps asking Fortunato to turn around and go back with Montresor because of Fortunato`s bad cough. But Fortunato insisted on going back. This was one of Montresor`s “expert ways” of revenge. Fortunato did not know what he was getting himself into. Fortunato just wanted to taste the Amontillado. Montresor is trying to get Fortunato into the drunk state for Montresor's revenge. As they proceed into the vaults after Fortunato`s vicious cough, Montresor knocks the neck off a bottle of wine. Montresor states while giving Fortunato the wine. “Drink.” Fortunato then takes the wine and says “I drink.” To the buried that repose around us”(6) Then Montresor goes on and says “And I to your long life”(6) Fortunato is clearly clueless to his revenge because he asks for another sip of the wine.
