Dr. Eddie Moore Jr. presented White Privilege 101 to the College of Education last Wednesday. The presentation was focused on White privilege. Male privilege, and how privileges can go unchecked if not brought into the discussion. The presentation was a balance of Dr. Moore Jr. lecturing about privilege is and also a dialogue with the audience to discuss how they understand privilege. In this paper, I will first discuss my reflections of the White Privilege 101 speech. I will then show connections between the faculty and staff responses and how Robert Birnbaum discusses power dynamics and agenda outcomes between faculty and administration. According to Birnbaum, administrative authority is reliant on the concept of superiors selecting the agenda and activities and the subordinates following (Birnbaum, 1988). However, professional authority is the understanding that one can be autonomous and relies on their knowledge to defend authority (Birnbaum, 1988). This concept is very interesting to me because of who choose to speak and who choose to remain quiet during the presentation. There were three professors who were very vocal throughout the presentation. When they spoke they announced their name, rank, and department before speaking. They were open to disagreeing with Dr. Moore Jr. and were also open to conflicting dialogue with fellow attendees. The professors were aligning with professional authority as they were relying on their advanced knowledge on the subject and were commanding the conversation. This was unique to observe because in my higher education experience I have seen more administrative authority used over faculty. At the College of Dentistry, administrators hold the power and will often talk over or not listen to faculty inputs. I was thrilled to see knowledge as power and enjoyed how the conversation was not
