What is it that intrigues you into wondering what is going through their lives: the slavery that is in their pasts, is it the poverty they have, the family that is helping them to move along, or is it the independence the they gave up or lost for their families? In both of the essays, the mothers are the inspiration and the hope. They keep the family from going too far into poverty. Motivation for improving their lives makes the family stick together and stay together longer. “Slavery”, “Or being a slave to”? What is it exactly? What is the meaning of this term? It is not only a negative that we so often hear about in our history books and the way it is still talked about. It also means that one is toiling over the labor that they have to do. She doesn’t seem to enjoy cooking. It is a job to her, which she must endure, instead of finding the joy in feeding and providing for her family. It’s just something else that needs to be done or accomplished as a mother does in daily life. Drudgery in the cooking, keeping the positive feelings toward her sister; whereas she wants to sit back, relax, have someone wait on her, or have someone sit and listen to her problems and troubles. It also has the meaning of servitude shown in “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens”.
