Our modern day society many times fails to recognize the illnesses that many people suffer because they are mental disorders that cannot be seen. People are quick to judge others based on their first impressions of those people; how people act, talk, etc. One of those disorders includes post-traumatic stress disorder. Those afflicted by this disorder can have what seem to random reactions to certain things, such as a distinct sound or hearing a specific word(s). Although it may seem peculiar, those reactions often come from shocking experiences that will have affected the condition of the victims psychological health. Experiencing a traumatizing event itself is far from rare, over 70% of American adults have experienced at least one of these events in their lifetime. About 20% of those 223 million Americans will go on to develop post traumatic stress disorder. It is estimated that about 8% of Americans will be struggling with post traumatic stress disorder at any given moment, that’s about 24.4 million people. Before formally being diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder the sufferer must have three distinct types of symptoms which include: re-experiencing symptoms, avoidance and numbing symptoms, and arousal symptoms. The first type of symptoms, re-experiencing, simply mean that the sufferer relives the traumatic event. This can include a reminder of the event or anything else that prompts a flashback. When this flashback occurs it can make the person feel the same horror that they had when the actual event took place. The next type of symptoms are avoidance and numbing in which the victim attempts to avoid anything that may cause the flashbacks discussed previously. They’ll make an effort to get around the sounds, sights, places, etc. that remind them of their traumatizing event(s). The numbing aspect comes into play when the person begins to isolate themselves from others and find difficulty in expressing their emotions. The final type of effects identified in post traumatic stress disorder victims are are arousal symptoms which make the person highly alert after the event has occurred.
