If you have ever seen a model or an actor on television and wondered how on earth they managed to get that incredible figure (really, who actually looks like that in real life?) you are probably looking at the results of a skilled personal trainer. A personal trainer is, by definition, an individual who works one on one with a person in order to help them to develop skill in a sport that they did not have previously. This can apply to an athlete in the field as well as a celebrity; as a matter of fact, most professional sports teams hire personal trainers to work alongside the coach in bringing the players up to the level of conditioning necessary for competitive athletics. This is not the role for which they are most widely known, however. What role can a personal trainer play in an ordinary life? Chances are that if you are reading this you are not a professional athlete. That’s okay! Personal trainers have a role that extends well beyond that of the big screen or the playing field. Their role in the day to day life of ordinary citizens has become the position for which they are most well known, helping to guide ordinary individuals living an ordinary life down the path of fitness and well being to achieve extraordinary things. A personal trainer is an individual that is knowledgeable in the workings of the human body and the standards of weight and size that are considered to be the “norm” for an individual, and they work very hard in a one-on-one capacity with ordinary individuals to help them to bring their bodies up to peak form. Their knowledge is invaluable; the number one reason that most individuals fail in their aspirations to physical fitness is the existence of unrealistic expectations. This is foolishness. Personal trainers do not expect their clients to be in prime condition; if they were then their services would not be needed. If you are truly worried about your figure it may help to enlist the services of a personal trainer of the same sex. It is easier for members of the same gender to address figure issues due to the lack of attraction issues. If you have such a concern about your body that you are afraid to show it to a personal trainer you probably have even deeper issues regarding your ability to attract the opposite sex. That is not meant to be an insult; it is simply a fact of life. Working with a personal trainer of your same gender should eliminate a great deal of this.
For this project, the certified athletic trainer who I have shadowed for almost eight hours in just one day is Candace O'Bryan, currently the athletic trainer at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron. Candace has worked at Hoban now entering her third year at the high school. She works alone as a trainer there but works along side one team doctor who is at every game, and the other one being a neurosurgeon but is just a parent helping out.
After reading this paper, there should be a better understanding of how the media incorrectly portrays these ideas. First, I’m going to focus on how the media destroys people motivation by displaying misleading photos in their advertisements. Most gyms, workout facilities, and athletic wear clothing get models that are very physically fit to advertise their company in their commercials, which is understandable because you do want the best to advertise your product. But when using people that look like they have been in the gym working out for over ten years, it can be very discouraging to the person that is just trying to start working out. And even more discouraging, most gyms will use models that use supplements that help improve their body size and strength.

There is a wide range of responsibilities for an athletic trainer, as they may work in many different environments. The general duties include assessment/diagnosis, rehabilitation, treatment and prevention of athletic injuries, and basic medical care. The specialized duties for an athletic trainer at the high school level will be very different than those at a professional level. This is due to a categorical distinction, as there is far more team funding at the professional level than in college or high school. Being physically fit inside and out is something that every person can control and achieve, but only through strong self-discipline. “The $52.9 billion fitness industry is constantly coming out with activities and products designed to get and keep us interested in working out” (Whigham-Desir 84). Two of these types of workouts, specifically Tae-Bo and Spinning, were created just for the purpose of keeping “us” interested in working out. Despite this revolution in the fitness industry, many false preconceived notions about losing weight persist and impede the movement.
